[First day of
Rosh Chodesh MarCheshvan* 5717]
You mention the recitation of the paragraphs Retzei* (see note 1) and Ya'aleh V'Yavo* (see note 2), since the Simchas Torah* meal (see note 3) continued into Shabbos* (see note 4), and what was said on this subject during the Chassidic farbrengen* (see note 5).
The Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, and that of the Alter Rebbe* explain all of this in chapter 188. According to the conclusion of these texts and the instruction, concretely applicable, that was given on this matter by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, a few years ago, after his arrival here, in a year whose calendar arrangement was the same as this one (see note 6): those who consumed a kezayis* (see note 7) during the day and another after nightfall — obviously after covering the bread and reciting Kiddush* (see note 8) — must say Retzei* first, then Ya'aleh V'Yavo*, in this order.
Notes:
(1) Inserted in the Grace After Meals* on Shabbos*.
(2) Inserted in the Grace After Meals* on a festival.
(3) Which fell on a Friday that year.
(4) Should one therefore insert only the second, or also the first?
(5) Of the Rebbe*, held on this occasion.
(6) Simchas Torah* also fell on a Friday.
(7) Approximately thirty grams.
(8) Of Shabbos*, on Friday evening.
