Greetings and blessings*,

I am responding to your letter of 26 Tishrei*, in which you present to me the arguments of the opposing camp (see note 1) — opposing the approach that one should not burden the minds of children with external ideas but rather, on the contrary, in the expression of the Sages, "feed them like an ox" with sacred studies.

I am surprised by their arguments, which are not defensible rationally. They emanate solely from their will, and it is known that the will is corruptive, that it distorts reasoning, particularly that of the intellect emanating from their animal soul*.

It is quite evident that your approach is the correct one (see note 2). One must endeavor, to the greatest extent possible, that they (see note 3) do not remain idle (see note 4). One must therefore teach them sacred subjects or have them review what they have already learned.

May Hashem grant you the merit and the success to break the ice that, it appears, exists in this matter in your city. The coldness will be transformed into the warmth and light of holiness, into the warmth and light of Chassidus*.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ו תשרי, בו כותב הנמוקים דהצד שכנגד להשיטה שלא לטמטם מוחות ילדים בענינים חיצונים, ובלשון חז"ל ורז"ל אדרבה להיוות ספי כתורי לימודי קדש, ולפלא הנמוקרים של הנ"ל שאין להם מקום בשכל (כ"א כנראה ברצון, אלא שהרצון משחד ומטעה את השכל ובפרט שכל האנושי של נה"ב). ומובן אשר צודק בהנהגתו, אלא שצריך להשתדל בכל עוז שלא יהיו הולכים פנוים מכל ענין, אלא יעסיקו אותם בלימודי קדש וחזרה על לימודיהם וכיו"ב, והשי"ת יזכהו ויצליחו דורכברעכען דעם אייז שכנראה ישבנו בענין זה במחנם הט', ויהפך הקור לחום ואור דקדושה לחום ואור חסידותי.
