27 Tishrei* 5717

Brooklyn

To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Shimon (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings*,

I am responding to your letter of 14 Tishrei*. It seems to me that you have already received the response to your previous letter. I am surprised that you confirm not having received it. Perhaps its delivery was delayed.

You allude to the haircut of your son, who will turn three years old on 14 Shevat*. You ask me whether you should delay it until Lag B'Omer* (see note 2). Your letter seems to indicate that this is the custom of the Chassidim* in the Holy Land.

You know how much importance our Sages accord to custom. However, you say in this case that some perform this haircut before the age of three so that it takes place on Lag B'Omer*. This does not suit me at all. Even if one wishes to say that celebrating it at Meron* (see note 3) is more important than the age of three, it is conceivable to delay it, but not to advance it.

As for delaying until Lag B'Omer*, this is conceivable if it is a matter of a few days (see note 4). However, one must consider whether the same position should be adopted for several months. Indeed, the haircut is an act of education, allowing, in the expression of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, to "leave the peyos* of the head." This beginning of education has been sanctified for many years and generations. It is therefore certain that it elicits heavenly blessing for the one who receives this education.

If the haircut is delayed, this blessing of Hashem is also delayed, and in the meantime, it is lacking for weeks and months.

You mention the entry into cheder* and you ask me whether one should wait until the child is three years old or whether he can go there before that. Everything depends on the education he has received until now. If he already observes certain practices at home, in accordance with the custom of many Jewish homes, there is no reason to anticipate his entry into cheder* (see note 5) before this age. Conversely, if his entry will strengthen these practices, it will therefore be more connected to education than to study. In such a case, it is no less important than education at home, which is not tied to a specific age.

Some do not wish to teach anything to the child before the age of three, in accordance with the verse: "for three years... they shall be for you..." (see note 6). However, I have not seen that the Chabad* Chassidim* conform to this practice. At most, one can make a distinction between oral and written instruction. You should consult the terms of the Alter Rebbe*, Laws of Torah Study, beginning of chapter 1. This also provides an obvious answer (see note 7) to the question posed in the commentary of the Gaon of Vilna* on the Shulchan Aruch* Yoreh Deah*, chapter 245.

You ask me whether you should continue your commerce of tefillin* and mezuzos*. Everything depends on whether your earnings are commensurate with the time you devote to this activity, and also whether you have another means of earning a more ample livelihood.

No doubt you will tell me, with the necessary details, what your activities during the month of Tishrei* have been. May Hashem grant that they be full and complete. Indeed, we are entering a complete year, according to the expression our Sages employ to allude to the second month of Adar*.

With my blessing*,
