Greetings and blessings*,

I am responding to your letter from the eve of Rosh Hashanah*.

It has been said regarding this period: "Seek Hashem when He can be found. Call upon Him when He is near." Of course, only Hashem Himself can say how it is possible to seek Him, for our thoughts are not His and His ways are not ours. In His great goodness, He has taught us His holy Torah*, the Torah* of life, which delivers teachings for life, which enables one to have an existence based on the Torah* and the Shulchan Aruch*. It is only in this way that a Jew can be happy, materially and spiritually.

How much more must a young couple, having just married — a man and a woman beginning their shared life — base it on the Torah* and the mitzvos*. It is impossible and even inconceivable that this man and this woman should wait, before doing so, until they understand all its aspects. For time would then pass uselessly.

An image will help to understand this — that of a sick person in a critical state who would stubbornly insist on learning medicine himself and would refuse to follow the specialist's treatment until he has completed his own studies.

If this is so for a part of the body and its needs, how much more is it the case for the needs of the soul, making its deficiencies disappear. In every era, the Sages* of Yisroel* have delivered teachings on this subject, and it is clear that this concerns you as well — to be sure with benevolence, but also with all the appropriate determination.

Both of you together and each of you must therefore say: "we will do" and only then "we will understand" — fulfilling the commandments of the Creator. By making this decision and by having "we will do" precede "we will understand," you will hasten your actual understanding.

Whoever takes note of the history of the people of Yisroel* will see that groups and circles that did not fully accept the Torah* and the mitzvos*, that strayed from its path widely or even only somewhat, diminished to the point of disappearing completely from among the Jewish people. They are fewer and fewer, and of some, not even a single survivor remains.

Those who overcame the trials of all eras, who still exist, are those who observe the Torah* and the mitzvos*. To be sure, due to our many sins, there are, in every generation, individuals who stray from the path of the Torah*, being unable to resist their evil inclination* and master their passions. After a certain time, they come to teshuvah* or, Heaven forbid, experience an ever-greater decline. Thus, the Mishnah* says that "one sin leads to another." It is surely unnecessary to say more.

It is surely unnecessary to emphasize that, regarding what touches the soul and conditions the future as a whole, one must not take heed of outside mockers. One is aware, indeed, that this is the foundation for many years, for decades of future life. Moreover, a large part of those who mock adopt this attitude because they themselves have been bitterly disappointed by their own ideals, because they are jealous of seeing a man or a woman standing firm in faith and possessing inner peace of the soul.

Obviously, all of this is addressed equally to your wife. You are a married couple and, as such, each of you is called "half of a body." Together, you can build a wholesome and virtuous home, if you truly desire it. Everything depends only on your will.

With my blessing* to give good news of all this as soon as possible and to be definitively sealed for a good year,
