Igrot Kodesh · Letter 475 — Study of Tanya
Volume 3 · Letter 70
By the grace of Hashem,
7 Nissan 5709,
To Mr. Baruch Levitin[1],
I send you my greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your letter asking how one studies the Tanya* 'by tasting it.'
You do not explain what you mean by studying it 'by tasting it.' I assume this means understanding its meaning. Indeed, Chassidut* in general and the Tanya* in particular are often considered very difficult, practically incomprehensible. That is why you speak of 'tasting' it.
I must warn you at the outset that the Tanya* and Chassidut*, on the same basis as the other parts of Torah*, are entirely accessible to anyone who genuinely wishes to study and understand them. Yet Chassidut* possesses a particular depth, such that even a scholar is not certain of grasping it fully. In this respect it is identical to all the other parts of Torah*.
Proof can be given of this. New chassidic discourses and new books appear that, building on the principles of Torah*, develop new ideas, demonstrating more clearly and more profoundly what was previously known.
Why does one discover in Torah* in general and in Chassidut* in particular these two opposing characteristics[2]? Their study is both simple and very complex, which may appear paradoxical. Indeed, Torah* belongs to the Wisdom of the Holy One, blessed be He.
In fact, the same can be said of Hashem:
1. The simplest people know He exists.
2. The greatest scholar, studying Divinity, will not be able to grasp It fully.
Now, the same is true of Torah*, for 'Torah* and the Holy One, blessed be He, are one.'
How does one study the Tanya* and Chabad* Chassidut*? You do not indicate in your letter the state of your knowledge in this matter, or whether you are only beginning this study. If you are beginning, insofar as one can judge, I would propose the following order: Sha'ar HaYichud VehaEmunah*, Iggeret HaTeshuvah*, then the first part of the Tanya*[3].
The first time, you will study it without stopping at each term, not even those that are not entirely clear, provided you understand the general meaning. The summaries of the Tanya* composed by the Tzemach Tzedek* and published by Kehot* will help you understand the first part of the Tanya*.
After a first study organized in this manner, and if in addition you study from time to time the chassidic discourses of the Sefer HaMaamarim*, I am convinced that you will be able to understand the Tanya* more deeply, by analyzing the content of its chapters more precisely.
It goes without saying that if you have questions about what has just been said or, more generally, about the study of Chassidut* in general, and you think I can be of help in this domain, write to me precisely, in the language you handle most easily. I will respond according to what I can know.
Nevertheless, I would ask you at the outset not to hold it against me if my reply is delayed, owing to my work for Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch*.
I hope to receive good news of your advancement in the understanding and study of the Tanya* and Chassidut*. I conclude by wishing you a kosher and joyous Pesach*.
