To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav* Moshe, who is called Dr. Taub,

Greetings and blessings*,

I am responding to your letter, in which you tell me that you are satisfied with the neighborhood in which you have settled. One finds there, indeed, the various elements of Chassidus*, of the fear of Hashem, and also of Chassidus*.

No doubt you and your wife are developing these domains. Indeed, a neighborhood is constituted by the people who reside and act in it. Each person receives a specific and important share of these accomplishments (see note 1).

Moreover, your professional activity is medicine. Now, in our day, all agree that the health of the body depends on that of the soul and its harmony. Our Sages* emphasize that peace, in this way, reigns here below.

The Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, explains that this is accomplished within the person (see note 2), his two souls — his divine soul and his animal soul — through the Torah*. For this, he must adopt a way of life conforming to the teachings of our Torah*, the Torah* of life.

You will no doubt find the right words, suited to the spirit of those who consult you medically. You will also explain to them how to heal their soul, based on what is said in various texts, particularly the Eight Chapters of the Rambam*, the books of Chassidus* and ethics.

On the occasion of the approaching new year, for us and for all of Yisroel*, for good and for blessing, I express my blessing to you and to all of yours, that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually.

(1) The neighborhood is therefore perfect only to the extent that each of its residents contributes to it.

ובטח גם הוא וזוגתו תחי' מוסיפים בענינים אלו, שהרי שכונה מציאותה מהאישים הנמצאים בה ופועלים בעניני', ועל כל אחד ואחת חלק מסוים וגם חשוב מפעולות בעבודה זו, ובפרט שהמקצוע שלו הוא מקצוע הרפואה, והרי בתקופה זו כולי עלמא מודים אשר בריאות הגוף תלוי בבריאות הנשמה ומנוחתה, וכבר ידוע מאמר חז"ל בשלום הנעשה בפמליא של מטה, וביאר רבנו הזקן בעל השו"ע והתניא, שהכוונה לאדם ושתי הנפשות שלו נפש האלקית ונפש הבהמית, ע"י התורה, פירושו אורח חיים כפי הוראת תורתנו תורת חיים, ובטח יש למצוא אותיות המתאימות לרוחו של המבקר אותו בתור רופא להסבירו ג"כ ענינים ברפואת הנפש, ועל פי המבואר בכמה מקומות ומהם בשמונה פרקים להרמב"ם ספרי חסידות ומוסר...

ולקראת השנה החדשה הבאה עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה ולברכה, הנני בזה להביע ברכתי, לו ולכל אשר לו, ברכת כתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה בגשמיות וברוחניות.
