To the great Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, filled with zeal, of manifold accomplishments, Rav Shimshon Raphael (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings*,

I received, with pleasure, your blessing on the occasion of the approaching new year. Whoever blesses is himself blessed, with the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He, Whose interest exceeds the principal.

You know the saying of the Alter Rebbe* (see note 2) that "one does not fight with ideas." Nevertheless, observing the moral situation of the youth in the United States and the evolution that has occurred in these very recent years, one can see that it is currently easier to act than before, that one can achieve far more important accomplishments. Whoever can intervene in this matter, and all the more so one who has already done so and has seen his efforts crowned with success, must mobilize for this sacred mission.

To be sure, one confronts, in this matter, veils and obstacles, as with everything that belongs to the domain of holiness. One of these is the stratagem of the evil inclination*, aiming to convince an active person that what he accomplishes has no effect, that it is a shame to devote the time and ardor that could be invested in other actions, particularly those that belong to the domain of holiness.

You know the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, in the name of his father, the Rebbe Rashab* (see note 3), that every idea which contributes to weakening a person's achievements linked to his practice of the Torah* and the mitzvos*, even if it has an appearance of holiness, comes in reality from "the other side" (see note 4). For he (see note 5) is expert in his craft and sometimes he knows how to disguise himself, donning a silk kapote* to appear before the person (see note 6). This is self-evident.

I hope you will not hold these few lines against me. As I was saying, one does not fight with ideas, but I see, in this case, the welfare of very many members of "Young Yisroel*" (see note 7) and of their families. I therefore consider it my duty to tell you all this. Please excuse me.

On the occasion of the approaching new year, for us and for all of Yisroel*, for good and for blessing, I express my blessing to you and to all of yours, that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually.

שלום וברכה!

בנועם קבלתי ברכתו לקראת השנה הבע"ל, וכל המתברך יתברך בברכתו של הקב"ה שתוספתו מרובה על העיקר...

ואף שידוע פתגם רבנו הזקן, מיט אן עצה שלאגט מען זיך ניט אן, אבל בראותי המצב הרוחני של הצעירים בארצוה"ב והמפנה אשר חל בשנים האחרונות ממש, שבקל יותר לפעול מאשר לפנים, ויש מקום לפעולות גדולות יותר, מובן אשר כל אחד שיכול לפעול בכיוון זה ועאכו"כ זה שכבר פעל וראה פירות בעמלו, צריך הוא לגייס את עצמו לעבודה קדושה זו.

ואף אשר ככל הענינים שבקדושה ישנם כמה העלמות והסתרים, ואחד מהם תחבולות היצר לפתות את האדם הפועל, שאין תועלת בפעולתו, וחבל על הזמן והמרץ שיכול לנצלם בענינים אחרים ובפרט בענינים דקדושה.

וידוע הפתגם בזה מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בשם כ"ק אדמו"ר אביו

מוהרש"ב - זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, אשר כל ענין וטענה המביא חלישות בפעולות האדם לתורה ומצותי' אפילו אם מראיהם החיצוני קדש הוא, מקורם מהלעומת זה, כי בהיותו אומן באומנתו, לפעמים מתחפש ובא לאדם באדרת משי - זיידענע זופיצע - וק"ל.

תקותי אשר כת"ר לא יקפיד על שורותי האמורות, אשר כנ"ל מיט אן עצה שלאגט מען זיך ניט אן, אבל כיון שרואה אני בזה טובתם של כמה וכמה מחברי ישראל הצעיר ומשפחותיהם, שבמילא פשוט בעיני שזהו גם טובתו של כת"ר ומשפחתו, מצאתי לחובה להגיד את האמור, ואתו הסליחה.

ולקראת השנה החדשה הבאה עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה ולברכה, הנני בזה להביע ברכתי לו ולכל אשר לו, ברכת כתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה בגשמיות וברוחניות.
