Greetings and blessings*,

I am responding to your letter of 15 Elul*, in which you briefly describe your life.

It would be good for you to study Iggeres HaTeshuvah* of the Alter Rebbe*, with the appropriate reflection and depth (see note 1). Concerning what is said there in chapter 3 (see note 2), on page 93a, one can observe that in our times, this practice has a negative consequence on one's health and therefore also on one's service of Hashem.

One must therefore exchange it (see note 3) for another form of mortification — for example, remaining silent rather than uttering words that are inappropriate, blocking one's ears from what one should not hear, closing one's eyes before what one should not see. In practical terms, one can observe that this is more difficult than those fasts. And the reward is commensurate with the effort.

In practical terms, this means that you must intensify your engagement in Torah* and mitzvos* in general, which includes the commandment "You shall love your neighbor as yourself" — influencing others in this direction in a friendly and peaceful manner.

One of the means of achieving this is to give a good example oneself, to show how a Chassid* must conduct himself in daily life. In this way, everything concerning you will improve more and more, for even a little light suffices to dispel much darkness. And the bad impressions, the negative elements, will diminish more and more.

To obtain the help of Hashem and His blessing in all this, one must increase peace within one's four cubits and in all of one's surroundings. I await good news of all this.

You also tell me of the state of your wife (see note 4).

Hashem will grant that her pregnancy proceed well, that she give birth easily and in its time.

On the occasion of the approaching new year, for us and for all of Yisroel*, for good and for blessing, I express my blessing to you and to all of yours, that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually.

With my blessing*,
