Greetings and blessings*,
I have duly received your letter of 14 Elul* and the one that preceded it.
I am surprised by them, for in such a case, the custom is to consult a Rav* who rules on Halachah*, having each party choose a Rav* (see note 1) or entrusting the judgment to the rabbinical court — not to write about a fellow Jew the expressions you use in your letter.
Moreover, we are in Elul*, the month of mercy, when every Jew — even the most perfect Tzaddik* — needs the compassion of Hashem. And it is said: "I will bless those who bless you" (see note 2). It is frightful, in this period, to employ expressions contrary to all of this.
It is said that "a person is close to himself" (see note 3). So it is for each one. If the fear of lacking bread (see note 4) is so great that it suggests to you such harsh words about a certain person, it surely has a source that is not pure. It therefore causes you to lose your head, for Hashem asks that we bless every Jew, as the Alter Rebbe* explains at length in chapter 32 of the Tanya*.
May Hashem grant, in these propitious days of the month of Elul*, that you change your attitude from one extreme to the other. Indeed, it is said: "Whoever has compassion on the creatures... (see note 5)." And you know what this term "creatures" designates (see note 6). How much more so when it concerns the people about whom you write.
With my blessing* to give good news of all this, that you overcome this trial, and be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
For the Rebbe* shlita*,
the secretary,
Notes:
(1) Who are in dispute, in order to constitute a rabbinical court that will decide the matter.
(2) It is by blessing others that one is oneself blessed, not by employing harsh words against them.
(3) He is not objective regarding his own person.
(4) The dispute concerns a professional matter.
(5) Will be shown compassion from Above.
(6) Those who have no other quality than having been created by Hashem.
