To the young man Moshe Chaim (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings*,

I am responding to your letter of the first day of Rosh Chodesh* Elul*.

You say that the study of the inner dimension of Torah* prepares the coming of Moshiach* and the complete redemption. You are, of course, correct. You know the response that King Moshiach* gave to the Baal Shem Tov* (see note 2). He affirmed to him that he would come "when your wellsprings* spread outward."

We therefore hold to the wellsprings* of the Baal Shem Tov*, of the Alter Rebbe*, of his disciples, and of the disciples of his disciples. Indeed, the inner dimension of Torah* must be received by tradition, from one master to another, as the Arizal* and his disciple Rabbi Chaim Vital explain at length. You should consult the awesome words that the latter pronounced on this subject.

You do not describe your study of the revealed dimension of Torah* and of Chassidus*. And I call Chassidus* what was defined above — that is, the wellsprings* of the Baal Shem Tov*. You will surely specify all this at the next opportunity.

You surely know the three well-known studies — Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*. You will observe them at least from now on.

במענה על מכתבו מאדר"ח אלול.

מובן שצודק הוא במה שכותב שלימוד פנימיות התורה הכנה לביאת המשיח וגאולה השלימה, וכידוע מענה דמלכא משיחא להבעש"ט, דאתי לכשיפוצו מעינותיך חוצה, אבל אנו אין לנו אלא מעינות הבעש"ט רבנו הזקן תל' ותלמידי תלמידיהם, וכידוע שבלימוד פנימיות התורה צריך להיות בקבלה רב מפי רב, וכמו שהאריך בזה האריז"ל ותלמידו הרח"ו, יעוין שם דברים מבהילים בזה.

אינו כותב מסדר לימודיו בתורת הנגלה ובתורת החסידות.

וכוונתי תורת החסידות הוא להנ"ל מעינות הבעש"ט וכו' ובטח ימלא בהזדמנות הבאה.

בטח יודע משלשת השיעורים בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים, וישמור עליהם עכ"פ מכאן ולהבא.
