Igrot Kodesh · Letter 471 — Wedding Blessing and Kabbalistic Explanation of Samach Tismach

By the grace of Hashem,

Rosh Chodesh Nissan 5709,

To the distinguished and learned Rav, who fears Hashem,

Rav C. H.[1],

I send you my greetings and blessings,

A) You have no doubt received, in its time, my letter of the day after Purim[2] and I am still awaiting your reply.

B) In addition to the telegram I sent you on the occasion of your daughter's wedding, I would like to renew my blessings that this union be a happy one, that the couple build an eternal edifice founded on Torah and Mitzvot*.

Our custom, in accordance with the teachings of my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, is to say[3] 'Samach Tismach'*[4] with a Patach* and not a Tzeirei* under the first Mem*.

Perhaps it is possible to explain this through Chassidut*. Indeed, the Patach* is linked to the Attribute of intellectual revelation, Chochmah*[5], which belongs to the right line, whereas the Tzeirei* is linked to reasoned analysis, Binah*. This is what the Biyurei HaZohar*, on Parshat Emor*, explain in connection with the verse 'She is my sister, daughter of my father but not daughter of my mother, and she became my wife.'

May the couple know only happiness and good, always and every day. You will consult the addenda of Torah Or*, in the chassidic discourse entitled 'to understand the source of milk and honey,' at the end of the first chapter. The Ari Zal* establishes there that Chochmah* belongs to the line of kindness.

C) I received your letter of 17 Adar. For various reasons, the lists[6] that accompanied your letter of 8 Adar have not yet been transmitted[7]. They will be delivered on the yahrzeit*[8] of 2 Nissan to my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita. A delay always proves to have a positive cause.

D) I will search for the letters that were assigned to you in the Sefer Torah*[9].

E) Enclosed you will find the fascicle published on the occasion of 2 Nissan and a letter from Machaneh Israel*. Please make them available to as many people as possible.

ג) נתקבל מכתבו מטו"ב אדר ע"פ סיבה לא הוכנסו ע"ע הרשימות ששלח במכ' דח' אדר ואכניסם ביום ההילולא דב' ניסן להיכל כ"ק מו"ח אד"ש ובטח כל עכבה לטובה.

ד) ע"ד האותיות שלו בספר תורה אחקור.

ה) מוסג"פ קונטר' לב' ניסן ומכ' ממחנ"י והם לזכות בהם את הרבים.
