To the attention of the Rav*, the renowned scholar, Chassid* who fears Hashem, filled with knowledge and conducting deep analysis, a distinguished man, Rav* Reuven (see note 1) HaCohen shlita*, Chief Rabbi, President of the Rabbinical Court and teacher at the Yeshivah* of Petach Tikvah* and its region,

Greetings and blessings*,

Following my telegram of the 9th of this month (see note 2), I enclose copies of my letters of 23 Tammuz* and Rosh Chodesh* Menachem Av, addressed to the chief rabbis — the scholar Rav* I. A. HaLevi shlita* Herzog (see note 3) and the scholar Rav* I. R. shlita* Nissim (see note 4) — as well as a copy of the telegram I sent them on 2 Menachem Av. In all these writings, I set forth my definitive opinion concerning the frightful problem of the Israeli ships (see note 5).

I am deeply sorry that the discussion on this matter has been prolonged to this extent and that the halachic* ruling of the chief rabbinate of the Holy Land has been delayed. In the meantime, a great number of our Jewish brethren are using these ships. I feel particular regret for the passengers of the ship departing on 15 Elul* in order to spend in the Holy Land the approaching Days of Awe. And another ship will literally depart on the eve of the holy day (see note 6).

I hope that you will yourself do, as quickly as possible, everything in your power to prevent this transgression of Shabbos* and this public desecration of the Name of Hashem.

הנני מצטער ביותר על אריכות הדיון ועיכוב הפס"ד של הרבנות הראשית לאה"ק ת"ו, שבינתים נכשלים כמה וכמה מאחב"י הנוסעים באניות הנ"ל. וביחוד גדול צערי על הנוסעים באני' העומדת להפליג בט"ו אלול כדי להגיע לאה"ק ת"ו על הימים הנוראים הבע"ל, ועוד אני' עתידה להפליג בפו"מ בערב יום הקדוש.

תקותי אשר כהדר"ג שליט"א יעשה כל מה שבידו באופן דחוף כדי למנוע חילול שבת וחילול השם דרבים.
