Greetings and blessings*,
I am responding to your letter of 7 Elul*.
I am particularly sorry to learn that your daughter traveled in this manner (see note 1), not only because she did not comply with what she was asked, but also because there is a prohibition therein, clearly established by our Sages* and perhaps even by the Torah*. But, due to our sins, those who granted permission in this matter were mistaken, because they are not well-acquainted with the operation of a ship, the means of steering it, and of providing service to its passengers.
It seems, for example, that no one has wondered, until now, where the fresh water comes from when the ship is at sea. In the era of the Talmud*, each traveler carried a certain quantity with him until he reached a place where he could resupply. Sometimes the captain carried it for all the passengers. But this is no longer the case nowadays.
At present, the salt water of the sea is desalinated every day, according to the quantity needed. For this, it is boiled in special tanks, then the steam is sent to another location that is cold, and the water is desalinated. Due to the lack of space on the ship, this operation is repeated daily according to the day's needs, which depend, of course, on the number of passengers. On such a ship, where practically all the passengers and crew members are Jewish, there is clearly cooking taking place during Shabbos*.
The same applies to several other tasks necessary for the comfort on board. This is in addition to the transgression of Shabbos*, the public desecration of the Name of Hashem. Several types of labor forbidden on Shabbos* are performed by the crew on behalf of the ship's owners. And they would not have been performed if the number of passengers on board were not sufficient to warrant them.
I have explained all of this at length in my letters addressed to the chief rabbis (see note 2), based on my knowledge as a mechanic regarding the operation of ships and their steering in general. Unfortunately, in this matter, there is the most significant public transgression of Shabbos*, committed by hundreds of Jews in full view of everyone. Naturally, each of the travelers participates in it, for one cannot compare a Shabbos* transgression by ten travelers to one that currently involves several hundred — even though what occurs in the presence of ten people is also considered a public act.
Naturally, I would not have written all this to you, knowing that it will cause you pain, if it were not so important. Everyone in the Holy Land (see note 3) must indeed make known to those around them that there is a definitive prohibition against operating a ship in this manner during Shabbos* and also against traveling on it. That is why I have departed from my reserve and written all this to you.
A brief reflection leads to the following conclusion. A battle is currently being waged to prevent the sale of pork, the construction of a Reform temple, and even the archaeological excavations at Beit She'arim*. Yet none of this is as grave as the frightful point just mentioned. Indeed, no one will succeed in deceiving the public to the point of making them believe that the Reform are Hashem-fearing, that pork is kosher*, or that the archaeological excavations at Beit She'arim* are a great mitzvah*. By contrast, several are inciting upright and Hashem-fearing Jews to use these ships, explaining to them that they are fulfilling an invaluable mitzvah* by traveling on an Israeli ocean liner that operates during Shabbos*.
Moreover, in this way, Jews are being used, since the public treasury gains thereby a few additional shekalim*, whereas according to our Torah*, the Torah* of life, Jerusalem was destroyed because Shabbos* was not observed. And if one Shabbos* were properly observed, the redemption would be immediate.
How wondrous are the associations of our Sages*! Indeed, the same text in Tractate Shabbos 119b says, immediately after this: "Because one did not rebuke the other, because one had no shame before the other" (see note 4).
Regarding such situations and the manner of improving them, you know the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us (see note 5), according to which one extinguishes a fire with gasoline and petroleum, which are indeed liquids like water, but do not extinguish fire — on the contrary.
It is unnecessary to say more, for this is painful and occasions a profound shock. I am sure that, for your part, you will also do everything possible in this matter.
May Hashem grant that we soon witness the elevation of the lot of the Tradition of Yisroel*, the observance of Shabbos*, and the promise (see note 6) that "they will be immediately redeemed."
With my blessing* to give good news of all this, and to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
