To my close relative, the Rav* and Chassid*, of pure ideas, from an illustrious family, Rav* Avraham Yehudah (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings*,

I received your letter of the eve of Rosh Chodesh* of the month of mercy (see note 2), which followed a long interruption. As you request, I will mention those you cite at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. I learned with satisfaction from your letter that you took part in the effort made on behalf of this man.

May Hashem grant that you reap the fruits and the "fruits of fruits." Above all, this step will not remain at the stage of speech, but a concrete action will result from it, which means that through your effort, this man will understand that action is essential. Moreover, you are at the origin of all this, and you thereby go against what seems to be self-evident to the human intellect.

What has just been said can be connected to the two views stated in Tractate Shabbos 88a — that of the Sadducee and that of Rava — according to which, by proclaiming "We will do and then we will understand," one protects oneself from the falsifications of the intellect.

To our misfortune and to our sorrow, it seems that in recent months, the battle against religion has intensified — the archaeological excavations at Beit She'arim* (see note 3), the observance of Shabbos*, pork (see note 4), reform. It is difficult to say more, so much does this evoke sorrow and even alarm.

Among the books I have recently received is also a biography of the Gaon of Vilna*. I was surprised to find therein a reference under your name, pointing to what the Tzemach Tzedek* says about the Gaon of Vilna*, at the end of the halachic* rulings of the Tzemach Tzedek* (see note 5).

Had I seen this reference under someone else's name, I would surely not have been as surprised. Nevertheless, I know the value you accord to the accounts of our holy masters, whose merit protects us, in particular those you heard in the house of your father (see note 6).

I am therefore truly very astonished. How could you have accepted something that totally contradicts the Tzemach Tzedek's* conception of Torah*, when his heart was that of a lion? You should consult the conclusion of his halachic* rulings, which report what he says about a teaching of the Alter Rebbe*.

Certainly, who am I... (see note 7)? Nevertheless, it is the Torah*... (see note 8). Your words surely belonged to the domain of holiness, regarding the Tzemach Tzedek*. But how could you have envisioned what you wrote there about him?

Similarly, it is reported that a great figure of our people, when someone cited an explanation in the name of the Rambam*, responded that it was mentioned nowhere. He then specified that his categorical response had not been formulated on the basis of his erudition. In fact, this assertion offended logic, and it was therefore impossible that the Rambam* was its author.

Here is what actually happened (see note 9), as I heard from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*. The halachic* rulings of the Tzemach Tzedek* were printed in Vilna, where the opponents of Chassidus* were powerful at the time, especially as the transition was then taking place in Lubavitch from one person to another (see note 10).

A copyist therefore added the words you cite. When the work left the press, this addition was discovered, and it was not corrected afterwards in most editions. Only a few copies were preserved that were accurate, as attested by the large number of copies of the latest edition, published in recent months.

And it is precisely in these recent months that opponents of Chassidus*, heirs of that era, have once again shown their defiance before the dissemination of its teaching. They use frightful means to obstruct it, going so far as to expel students from the Yeshivah* because they were discovered studying the Tanya* (see note 11). Naturally, as has been the case in recent years, no one pays attention.

Such an error is therefore regrettable, even if, in general, such anomalies are unavoidable.

I possess the manuscript of these halachic* rulings, which is admittedly only a copy, the original having remained on the other side of the ocean (see note 12). Naturally, these two lines are not found there.

With my blessing* to give good news, that you and the members of your family be inscribed and sealed for a good year, and above all, that you possess clarity in a positive manner.
