Greetings and blessings*,
I am responding to your letter of the second day of Rosh Chodesh* Elul*, the month of mercy, which is filled with complaints about your situation. Indeed, you say that you do not achieve success, including in the influence you exert on others.
You know the saying (see note 1) of our holy masters, that every obstacle to what is useful or to what concretely strengthens the service of Hashem, even for the most elevated cause, is merely a stratagem of the animal soul.
And so it is in your case. If these complaints increased your ardor in the study of Torah*, the practice of mitzvos*, and the spreading of the wellsprings* (see note 2) outward, they would perhaps be justified, even though they do not conform to the ways of Chassidus*, which reminds us: "You shall serve Hashem with joy."
However, if my fears prove well-founded — if these complaints weaken you in all these domains — then you are confronting a well-known stratagem of the evil inclination, which says to a person: "In any case, you will not succeed, you will not be able to vanquish me. Why engage on this path (see note 3)?" — Heaven forbid.
The falsehood in this argument is quite clear. Indeed, each one of us, among all the people of Yisroel*, has received the assurance of having a share in the World to Come, as it is said: "None of us will be cast away."
In our times, another point is added to all this, as the Chassidic discourses of Shabbos* Parshas* Ekev* (see note 4) and Shabbos* Parshas* Shoftim* (see note 5) explain: "'And it will be if' — during the period of the heel (see note 6) of Moshiach* (see note 7): then it is certain that 'you will hear these judgments,'" for this is the last generation, when the transformation of matter cannot be postponed. Therefore, "it is certain that you will hear," for even a brief reflection suffices to prove to the "old king" (see note 8) that such a ruse is senseless on his part.
It is, however, much wiser not to engage in dialogue with him. It is a shame to devote time to this. Moreover, it is said that "whoever associates with a wicked person... (see note 9)." You must therefore excite the good inclination against him, explain to yourself that while it is indeed said "You will not be liberated in haste," this applies only once the redemption, the departure from exile, has already begun — but not in these final moments of exile.
On the contrary, in this period, every instant receives tremendous value. Very soon, "the years will arrive regarding which You will say: I do not desire them" (see note 10), in the expression of Tractate Shabbos 151b. One must therefore use each of these instants in the most effective manner.
A little light dispels much darkness, and it is clear that by serving Hashem directly, through Torah* and mitzvos*, one can dispel darkness much more clearly than by engaging in dialogue with the evil inclination.
What has just been said also shows you how important it is to study the inner dimension of Torah*, which awakens the love and fear of Hashem. You should consult, on this matter, the Rambam*, Laws of the Foundations of the Torah, at the beginning of chapter 2, and the conclusion of the introduction to the Sefer HaChinuch*.
And this study must be daily, like the measure that protects the harvest (see note 11), which in this case is the revealed dimension of Torah*, as our Sages* teach in Tractate Shabbos 31a: "He said to him: it would have been preferable... that... without..." (see note 12). Likkutei Torah*, Vayikra, page 6a, explains all of this. You should consult it.
May Hashem grant that these few lines, relatively brief considering the importance of the subject, persuade you to influence your friends (see note 13) in this matter.
On the occasion of your birthday (see note 14), you surely adopted the recent Chassidic* custom for this day. May Hashem grant that you have a year of success in the study of the revealed dimension of Torah* and of Chassidus*, in the best practice of mitzvos*, which also and above all includes fervent prayer, which is the spinal column that gives stature to the body whose limbs are the two hundred and forty-eight positive commandments of the Torah*. You should consult, on this subject, Likkutei Torah*, Balak, page 74.
With my blessing* that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
