Greetings and blessings*,

It is surely unnecessary to emphasize to someone like you that, if the role of an Orthodox school has always been to teach our holy Torah* to its students, a new mission has been entrusted to it in our times.

Nowadays, the school must educate in Jewish values in general, in the practice of mitzvos*, including transmitting the most elementary knowledge — in other words, making the child a complete Jew, a descendant of Avraham*, Yitzchak*, and Yaakov*. Clearly, this objective is even more important than receiving Torah* knowledge, if indeed one can distinguish between the two.

Consequently, as I have explained at length elsewhere, it is indispensable to include in all school programs, whatever they may be, from the youngest class to the oldest, a significant amount of time for the study of the principles of Judaism, of the laws that are practiced daily, and of customs. And you know the teaching of our Sages* that "the practice of the Torah* is greater than its study."

There surely exists a general curriculum that must be taken into account. Nevertheless, it is certain that every school director has the ability to broadly introduce such knowledge and this form of education. Everything depends solely on his will.

If one considers the importance of all this, the fundamental value of what can be accomplished, one will say that every effort is justified. And the merit of all these children will come to your aid.

... בודאי לדכוותי' אך למותר לעורר שאם בכל הזמנים תפקידו של בית הספר החרדי הי' ללמד את ה[מ]חונכים תורתנו הקדושה, נוסף בתקופתנו התפקיד שצריך הוא לחנכם בעניני יהדות בכלל וקיום המצות ואפילו ידיעות הכי פשוטות, במלות אחרות לעשות מציאות של ילד ישראלי בן אברהם יצחק ויעקב, ומובן ופשוט שזהו עיקרי עוד יותר מאשר ידיעת התורה אפילו את"ל שיש להפריד ביניהם.

שלכן, וכמו שהארכתי במקום אחר, מוכרח שבכל תכנית לימודים איזה שתהי', מכתה הכי נמוכה עד לכתה הכי גדולה וגבוה, יוקדש חלק חשוב ללימוד עיקרי היהדות וידיעת הלכות הצריכות בחיי יום יומים מנהגי ישראל וכו', והרי ידוע פס"ד חז"ל, גדולה שמושה של תורה יותר מלימודה.

בטח ישנה תכנית כללית שעמה מתחשבים, אבל בודאי די מקום לכל מנהל ביה"ס שלו להכניס הלימוד והחינוך האמור במדה חשובה, ואין הדבר תלוי אלא ברצון המנהל, ובערך גודל הענין וחשיבותו היסודית כל יגיעה בזה כדאית, וזכות הרבים תשב"ר מסייעתו.
