and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

I have just received your letter of 22 Menachem Av, in which you describe the Melaveh Malkah* that took place upon your arrival and the way you envision your work in the future.

You no doubt know that the Chassid of manifold accomplishments, Rav Moshe Zalman (see note 2) and his son David, may they be granted long life, are currently here. In speaking with them, I received the impression that there is much to be done within Yeshivas Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak* of Melbourne, especially in the current situation. Indeed, if one does not take advantage of the coming days and weeks to develop this yeshivah in the proper manner, one cannot be certain that the opportunity will present itself again. Consequently, whoever is close to such an endeavor, in heart and in mind, must work at it with all his strength.

Furthermore, it is indispensable to create immediately a Chabad* girls' school, which will be called Beis Rivka* or Beis Sarah*. Here too, I was able to verify in the course of this discussion that one must seize this propitious moment, not only to found this school but also to develop and expand it, to the extent possible.

I therefore stated that one must not wait to create this girls' school, that one must not first find a building, let alone construct one. Indeed, it is said that there is an empty classroom in the yeshivah building. There is also the women's synagogue. In that case, you will install a door so that the entrance and exit of the girls are separate. You will also arrange a partition in the courtyard, so that it not be mixed.

As soon as he returns to Melbourne, studies will begin, and you will make this known to all.

You can deduce from this what I think about the way you envision your work, as you describe it in your letter. I consider, very clearly, that you must devote yourself to the development of Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak, to the founding and development of the Chabad girls' school Beis Rivka or Beis Sarah. Obviously, you will do this together with all the other Chassidim of your city, with the proper energy.

You know the importance, specified by our holy Torah*, of a mitzvah* that can only be performed during a limited time. It has been observed until now that Hashem has granted His blessing, bestowing considerable success, even though one has unfortunately not utilized all the possibilities this offered, to the extent that was possible. I am certain that in the future, your accomplishments will have even greater success, and it will be necessary to make full use of it.

May Hashem grant that you have enough time and energy to take advantage of all this in the proper manner. I await good and detailed news from you. You will tell me that you have made the proper preparations for these activities and that you are carrying them out concretely, immediately.

ז"ע נתקבל מכתבו מכ"ב מנ"א, בו כותב מעריכת המלוה מלכה לביאתם ומהסברות בנוגע לאופן עבודתו להבא.

והנה בודאי נודע לו אשר נמצא פה עתה הוו"ח רב פעלים מו"ה משה זלמן ובנו דוד שליט"א, ומשיחתי אתם נוצר אצלי הרושם אשר עבודה רבה בישיבת אהלי יוסף יצחק במעלבורן ובפרט במצב העכשוי, כי בודאי באם לא ינצלו ימים ושבועות אלו להרבות הישיבה ככל הדרוש, אי אפשר לדעת אם תהי' אפשריות זו לאחר זמן, ומזה מובן שכל אלו שהענין יקר ללבם ולנפשם צריכים לעבוד בזה בכל כחותיהם, ובפרט שמוכרח הדבר להקים תיכף ומיד בית ספר לנערות בנוסח חב"ד (בשם בית רבקה או בית שרה), וגם בזה נוכחתי בשיחתי האמורה שמוכרח לנצל שעת כושר זו לא רק לייסד בית הספר אלא גם להתרחבותו ולהתפשטותו האפשרית, עד שלכן אמרתי להנ"ל שלא יחכו ביסוד ביה"ס לנערות עד שימצאו בנין ובית ופשיטא שלא עד שיבנו בנין, אלא שכיון שע"פ השמועה ישנו חדר פנוי בבנין הישיבה או עזרת נשים וכיו"ב יעשו פתח לכניסה ויציאה מובדל בשביל הנערות (וגם גדר בחצר בכדי שלא תהי' תערובת), ותיכף לחזרת הנ"ל צלחה למעלבורן יתחילו בלימודים ויפרסמו עד"ז...

ומזה מובנת גם כן השקפתי בהנוגע להסברא דאופן פעולתו אודותה כותב במכתבו, אשר דעתי ברורה שיטיל את עצמו (אריינווארפען זיך) בהרחבת אהלי יוסף יצחק, וביסוד והרחבה של בית ספר לנערות בית רבקה (או בית שרה) דחב"ד, כמובן ביחד עם שאר אנ"ש אשר במחנם הט' ובכל המרץ הדרוש; וכבר ידוע פסק תוה"ק עד כמה גדולה מצוה שאפשר שזמנה עובר; וכמו שראו עד עתה הברכה מלמעלה בהצלחה מופלגה (אף שלצערי לא ניצלו כל האפשריות שניתנו כדי הצורך), מובטחני שגם להבא יתברכו מעשי ידיהם בהאמור בהצלחה מופלגה, אלא שצריך לנצלה ביותר וביותר, והלואי שיספיק זמנם ומרצם לנצלה ככל הדרוש, ואחכה לבשו"ט ומפורטות שנגשו להכנות המתאימות לפעולות האמורות ולהפעולות עצמן תיכף.
