29 Menachem Av 5716

Brooklyn

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 21 Menachem Av.

At an auspicious time, I will mention all those you cite near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. You are, in this case, the one who formulates the request (see note 1), and no doubt you will therefore redouble your fervor and ardor in the study of Torah* and the practice of Mitzvos* in the best manner. In this way, you will hasten the fulfillment of these requests (see note 2).

You tell me that you have difficulty directing your thoughts and concentrating during Torah study and prayer. You know the good counsel that has been given on this subject. One must study with a book and pray with a Siddur*. Even if you are meditating upon a line of reasoning, reconstructing it in your mind, there should be, at that moment, a book expounding this idea open before you. If you feel your thoughts wandering, you will consult the text. The words will capture your attention, enable you to understand, and illuminate you.

With my blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe shlita*,
the secretary,
