To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Nathan David (see note 1),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of this Monday. In accordance with your request, a calendar for the coming year, with portraits of our holy masters, whose merit protects us, will be sent to you as soon as it is available.
You tell me that you are devoting yourself to research on the biography of Rav (see note 2). You have surely seen the biography of the Sages of the Mishnah* and the Gemara*, by Rav Heyman, in which he cites references to their teachings. It seems to me that a few decades ago there was also a specific brochure about Rav, but for the moment I do not recall the name of its author.
In any case, one must commend all those who devote themselves to accomplishments that may increase the fear and love of Hashem or the love of Torah*.
You ask me about the difference between the following various formulations: "such-and-such Rav says," "such-and-such Rav says that such-and-such Rav says," "such-and-such Rav says in the name of such-and-such Rav." You should consult, on this subject, the references you will find below (see note 3).

ובמ"ש שעסוק באסיפת תולדות רב וכו' בודאי ראה תולדות תנאים ואמוראים להרב היימן, בו מציין מקום ימצא מאמרי התנאים ואמוראים וכו', וכמדומה לי שמלפני עשיריות בשנים הו"ל גם חוברת מיוחדת בהנוגע לרב, אף שאיני זוכר לע"ע שם המחבר, אבל כל ענין שיכול להוסיף ביראת השם ואהבתו ואהבת התורה, יישר חילם של המתעסקים בזה.
במה שהעיר בדיוק לשון רז"ל אמר רב פלוני או א"ר פלוני אמר ר"פ - או משום פלוני, יעויין במקומות המצוינים בשולי הגליון*...
