Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 18 Menachem Av, in which you tell me that you are seventeen years old (see note 1). And your father proposes that you return to Morocco to assist him professionally.
You know how important it is to honor one's father. Nevertheless, in your case, the proposal being made to you does not seem at all appropriate. Indeed, man's livelihood depends upon the One Who gives the Torah*. It is therefore clear that you will not improve it by neglecting its study (see note 2).
Moreover, by studying Torah with fervor and ardor, you will undoubtedly obtain from the One Who feeds everyone that He improve your father's livelihood. For Hashem can intervene in various ways (see note 3).
If you wish my advice, you will therefore intensify your study of the revealed dimension of Torah and of Chassidus*, you will fulfill the Mitzvos* in the best possible manner, and you will pray with fervor, for this is, of course, essential. Good will result from this for you, for your father, and for the members of your family.

במענה על מכתבו מי"ח מנ"א, בו כותב שהוא בן שבע עשרה שנה, ואביו מציע לו לחזור למרוקה לעזור לו בפרנסתו.
והנה אף שידוע גודל הענין דכבוד אב, הנה בענינו אין נראה לי האמור כלל וכלל, כי כיון שפרנסת האדם תלוי' בנותן התורה, בודאי שעל ידי זה שיבטל מלימוד תורתו אין זה תועלת להיטיב מצב הפרנסה, ועוד זאת, שעל ידי שיוסיף ללמוד בהתמדה ושקידה בלי ספק אשר הזן ומפרנס לכל ייטיב מצב פרנסת אביו, וכמה דרכים למקום, ואם לדעתי ישמע יוסיף בלימוד בנגלה ובחסידות בהידור בקיום המצות ובעבודת התפלה מהעיקרים בזה, כמובן וטוב יהי' לו וגם לאביו ובני ביתו שיחיו.
