Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter, in which you announce that your daughter, may she be granted long life, has become engaged.
Thanks to the education she received at Beis Yaakov*, she surely has no need for a lengthy explanation of the meaning of the blessing pronounced at the wedding, instituted by the members of the Great Assembly*. This text, indeed, describes marriage as a "building." Now, all the words of our Sages are exceedingly precise. They are never mere figures of speech, harmonious but devoid of meaning. They correspond, in every point, to reality.
In a building, the walls, the roof, and everything within, however attractive and beautiful they may be, have value and endure only insofar as the foundations are solid and broad, capable of withstanding cold and heat. The slightest weakness in these foundations is infinitely more grave than an absent decoration, than the beauty and harmony of the part of the edifice above ground.
It is quite clear that external beauty has no bearing on the building materials; it will not alter them. The sole condition is that these materials be solid, resistant to all the changes they will subsequently undergo without thereby being called into question.
You should understand what this means. Marriage is the building of an edifice. The preparation for it and the wedding canopy* lay the foundations. For this, one must make good decisions for married life, with a whole heart, with determination. Once again, upon this depends both spiritual and material happiness.
In this matter, the opinion of mocking onlookers is of no importance. It suffices to be certain that the foundations have proven themselves, in various ways and with success. Such is the teaching of our Torah*, the Torah of life, the eternal Torah. Since it was given at Mount Sinai, it has withstood various trials. It has remained whole. "It has length of days at its right, at its left wealth and honor." True length of days and true wealth consist of a life filled with content, whole and healthy, a life of people happy with their lot, blessed by Hashem in all their needs.
May Hashem grant that you derive from them much true satisfaction, for long days and good years.
With my blessing,
