Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 17 Menachem Av. I am surprised that you say nothing of your meeting with the young emissaries* (see note 1), may they be granted long life, nor of your participation in the Chassidic gathering* they organized. This would have made it more lively, more spirited, from several points of view.

This would have enabled you to see how right you were to say that reflection upon your situation is, as you write, a stratagem of the evil inclination*. As you know, the criterion in this matter consists in observing the concrete effect of one's reflection and thought. If Torah* study and the practice of Mitzvos* are weakened thereby, it means their source is not pure (see note 2). This is self-evident.

In your location, there is much to be done to strengthen Yiddishkeit* in general and to spread the wellsprings* (see note 3) in particular. I am therefore surprised that you seek something else, even across the ocean, when Divine Providence* provides you with a means of ensuring your spiritual sustenance within your four cubits* and your surroundings. You can also ensure your material sustenance there, which, for a Jew, derives from one's spiritual sustenance.

May Hashem grant that these few lines suffice to clarify your situation. You will also influence your friends, your close ones, and your acquaintances in this domain. You will know success. I mean that you will breathe vitality into their zeal and their sacred accomplishments. Do not content yourself, therefore, with inquiries about which one can truly question whether they are incumbent upon you, at least at the present time.

שלום וברכה!

במענה על מכתבו מי"ז מנ"א, ולפלא שאינו מזכיר מפגישתו עם האברכים השלוחים שליט"א והשתתפותו בהתועדות שלהם וכו', אשר עי"ז הי' נתוסף חיות (און אפגעפרישקייט) בכמה מהענינים, ואז הי' רואה שצדק בדבריו שההתבוננות במצבו הוא ככתבו, עצת היצר, וכידוע הבחינה בזה לראות השפעת ההתבוננות והמחשבה בהנוגע לפועל, שבאם עי"ז באה חלישות בלימוד התורה וקיום המצות, מקורה בלתי טהור, וק"ל.

ולפלא שבה בשעה שבמקומו כר נרחב ביותר להחזקת היהדות בכלל ולהפצת המעינות ביחוד, מחפשים הם ענינים אחרים ואפילו מעבר לים, בה בשעה שההשגחה העליונה הזמינה להם פרנסתם ברוחניות ובד' אמות בסביבה שלהם, והפרנסה בגשמיות הרי אצל איש הישראלי היא מסובבת מהפרנסה ברוחניות.

ויה"ר ששורותי אלה המעטות תספיקנה להבהיר המצב וישפיע גם על חבריו ידידיו ומכיריו בזה ויהי' בהצלחה, כוונתי שיתוסף חיות במרצם ובפעולותיהם בקדש ואל ישעו בחיפושים לענינים שצריך עיון גדול אם בשטח עבודתם הם - עכ"פ לעת עתה.
