Igrot Kodesh · Letter 464 — Torah Study, Prayer, and Outreach in Remote Communities

To Rav Meir Chaim Chaikin [1]

I received your letter. The Purim* fascicle is enclosed — it is especially relevant to chassidim* in remote areas. These regions need: Torah* study (both revealed and hidden), prayer (teaching its importance to adults and accustoming children to it), and good deeds (tzedakah*).

Also addressed to his father-in-law, Rav Eliyahu Shmu'el HaCohen Cahanov [2] — a reminder of the teaching of the Sages*: 'One may butcher an animal at the market and accept payment; one cannot say: I am a Kohen* and a man of importance.'

The Kabbalistic* explanation: butchering alludes to the garments of skin that resulted from the sin of the Tree of Knowledge; the animal refers to those who are considered dead while alive [3]; the market alludes to the need to go to places of commerce, as explained at the beginning of Torah Or* in Parshat* Vayeshev; the payment is justified because the poor (even in knowledge) gives to the rich more than the rich gives to the poor; a Kohen* is not detached from worldly concerns, as the Rambam* writes at the end of the Laws of Shemita and Yovel*; and one must not act as a man of importance accumulating intense lights in the manner of the Tohu* system, with solid vessels in the manner of the Tikkun* system.

מכתבו מכ"ד שבט נתקבל ומוסג"פ קונטרס לפורים שהו"ל זה עתה ובטח יזכה בו את הרבים. והמכתבים אשר בסופו מתאימים בפרט לאנ"ש והתמימים שי' שהובאו לפינה שעדיין לא הותחלה עבודה רבה שבהם והיא עומדת ומחכה כמה וכמה זמן לפב"פ שיבא ויעשנה ובודאי יש מקום לפעול ולהתגדר בקו התורה (קביעות שעורי למוד בנגלה ונסתר) בקו העבודה (הודעת ענין התפלה לגדולים ובפרט הרגל בתפלה וברכה אצל הקטנים בשנים או בדעה) בקו הגמ"ח (ובפרט שתהי' הצדקה לענינים מהוגנים ולפום גמלא) וכמובן לא אליו לבד כוונתי בהנ"ל אלא גם לחותנו שי' אשר כנראה צריך לעוררו על מרז"ל פשוט (מן הכתנות עור שמקורם בחטא עה"ד) נבלתא (שקרוים מתים גם בחייהם) בשוק (שלזה צריך לצאת למקום המסחר כמשנ"ת בתו"א ר"פ וישב ובכ"מ) ושקול אגרא (כי יותר כו' העני - בדעה - עושה עם בעה"ב) ואל תאמר כהנא אנא (ואין לי שייכות לעניני עוה"ז עפמש"כ ברמב"ם סוף הל' שמיטין ויובלות) וגברא רבא אנא (וכבר יש לי אורות מרובין - דתהו - בכלים מרובין - דתקון. ראה במאמר המוסג"פ פ"ז).
