To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Avraham (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 14 Menachem Av. I read with pleasure that you come from an old family of Chabad* Chassidim. Moreover, one can read between the lines that you are aware of the great value and the fortune of this heritage.

Various texts establish that an inheritance is only incidentally the passage of goods from one person to another. In reality, it is, above all, in accordance with the words of the Mishnah* in Tractate Eduyos, chapter 2, Mishnah 9, a transmission from father to son, who receives from him beauty, strength, wealth, and wisdom.

The commentary on the Mishnah specifies that "wisdom is the correct perception." Nevertheless, the Creator of the world, Who directs it, desires that man receive the most perfect good possible. This is why He opens before him the choice between two paths.

In this matter, a Jew puts into practice the words of the verse: "And you shall choose life." In such a case, it is not the "bread of shame" (see note 2) that one receives as a gift, but rather the result of effort on the part of man.

I have good hope that you will ensure the continuity of this golden chain*, in accordance with the teachings of our Torah*, of Chassidus*, of its practices and its customs. You will influence your surroundings, in particular the members of your family, so that all follow this path, the one that provides a happy life.

As you request, I will mention all those you cite near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us.

You inform me of the engagement of your daughter Tzipora, may she be granted long life. May Hashem grant that it be with Mazal Tov*, at a good and fruitful time, that she build a Jewish home, an everlasting edifice, based on Torah and Mitzvos*.

With my blessing of Mazal Tov,

I would like to know if you possess manuscripts of our holy masters or family notes whose content might illuminate, for example, the history of the Chassidim of the early generations.

במענה על מכתבו מי"ד מנחם, נעם לי לקרות בו אשר נצר הוא לזקני חסידי חב"ד, ועוד יותר ממה שניכר מבין השיטים שמכיר הוא בגודל הרכוש והאושר אשר בירושה זו, וכמבואר בכמה מקומות אשר ירושה אין זה עיקר ענינה שהנכסים עוברים מרשות אחד לרשות השני - אלא והוא העיקר וכלשון המשנה עדיות (פרק ב' משנה ט') האב מוריש לבנו, דזוכה בנוי ובכח ובעושר ובחכמה, ובפי' משניות שם, חכמה הסברא הישרה - אלא שבורא עולם ומנהיגו רוצה שיקבל האדם הטוב בשלימותו היותר אפשרית, ולכן נותנים מקום לבחירה בין שני דרכים, והאיש הישראלי מקיים מה שנאמר ובחרת בחיים, שאז אין זה נהמא דכיסופא שמקבל בתור מתנה אלא הבא על ידי יגיעה, ותקותי שממשיך בשלשלת הזהב מתאים להוראת תורתנו תורת החסידות הדרכותי' ומנהגי' ומשפיע בסביבתו ועל בני ביתו ביחוד שילכו בדרך זו דרך חיים מאושרים.

כבקשתו אזכיר את כל אלו שכותב אודותם על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע.

ולהודעתו מקשורי התנאים של בתו צפורה שתליט"א, הנה יה"ר שיהי' למזל טוב ובשעה טובה ומוצלחת ולבנין בית בישראל בנין עדי עד על יסודי התורה והמצוה.
