Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of this Thursday (see note 1), in which you tell me that you are behind the choice of Captain Y. H. (see note 2) to serve as my counterweight in this matter. And you enclose with your letter a press clipping reporting his remarks. I deduce that what is printed therein corresponds to what he actually said.

You mention his competence and his experience in operating ships. Yet he does not address their existence from the standpoint of profitability — but perhaps he does not know that they have been in service for several years already. He justifies their existence solely by the fact that Jews wish to use them, a large portion of the passengers and cargo being sent by Jewish organizations and official agencies, which will resort to them in any case.

In this regard, what he says about the commercial fleet is also not accurate, for the question concerns ships that primarily transport passengers. But perhaps passenger transport also falls within the framework of a commercial fleet, an expression that should be contrasted only with that of a military fleet.

I wrote that he sought to mislead even regarding what is supposed to be his profession. Indeed, he should have specified that in addition to kindling fire, dozens of labors forbidden by the Torah* are also performed on board, which are currently necessary for operating a ship. I therefore wished to make these explicit, since an attempt was made to deceive in a very simple fashion by claiming that, so long as the fire does not incidentally go out in the furnace, it is possible to operate the ship automatically — that is, without transgressing even a single rabbinical prohibition, let alone a Torah prohibition. Such a claim demonstrates the most dismaying ignorance, even on the part of beginners in maritime professions, as I stated in my letter.

As for the profitability these ships may have, that is unfortunately not at all what is under discussion here. Furthermore, a very long time will pass before anyone begins to consider the proposal for a patent, as you suggest. At present, none exists for any ship. And in the meantime, Shabbos* is massively profaned with each passing week. It is difficult to say more about what undermines the fundamental principles of Yiddishkeit*. Yet no one pays attention to any of this.

In accordance with the conclusion of your letter, you surely have a fixed time for the study of Chassidus*, given the education you received. You also influence your surroundings in this regard.

With my blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe shlita*,
the secretary,
