Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter announcing the good news of the imminent engagement of your son. May Hashem grant that you observe the Divine Providence*, that you draw the appropriate conclusions in this matter — namely, the necessity that he conduct his life on the path of Torah* and Mitzvos*, with integrity. "The result corresponds to the effort" (see note 1), and he has therefore received all the necessary strength for this. Everything depends solely on his will.

I am surprised that you say nothing of your participation in Chabad* activities. I am afraid to suggest that, in this case, the well-known saying applies: when the father steps back one step, the son does so several steps.

I mean that by keeping your distance from Chabad's accomplishments, by abstaining from any positive action and complete participation, you are distancing your domain several steps from the domain of Chabad. But you know the discourse of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, explaining the lesson to be drawn from Pesach Sheini* (see note 2): "It is never too late" (see note 3). You should understand what I mean.

No doubt the wedding will be celebrated quickly. The sooner it takes place, the better.

במענה על מכתבו, בבשורה הטובה אשר בנו שי' עומד לבוא בקשורי תנאים בקרוב, - הנה יה"ר שיכיר ביד ההשגחה העליונה ויבוא למסקנות הנכונות מזה והן להדריך חייו בדרך התורה והמצוה במילואה, ולפום גמלא שיחנא, וניתנו לו כל הכחות הדרושים ואין הדבר תלוי אלא ברצונו...

לפלא שאין מזכיר מהשתתפותו הוא בעניני חב"ד, וחוששני לומר שהוא ע"ד הפתגם הידוע, שכשהאב נוטה צעד אחד הצדה נוטה בנו כמה צעדים, כוונתי שבזה שהוא עומד בריחוק מעניני חב"ד בהעדר פעולה חיובית והשתתפות מלאה, גרם לנטיית בנו שי' כמה צעדים בנטי' מכרם חב"ד, אבל כבר ידוע שיחת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בלימוד המיוחד בענין דפסח שני, אז עס איז קיינמאל ניט צו שפעט, וק"ל.

בטח לא יאריכו עד לזמן החתונה והקדם בכגון דא משובח.
