To the leaders of the Yeshiva* Tomchei Temimim* in Lod, may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you and bless you.

I follow up on my letter of 7 Menachem Av, and in the meantime I have received yours of 4 and 7 Menachem Av, as well as the photographs, cards, and tape recordings. I thank you for all of this.

I have already written that regarding the fundraising for the printing school, as with all other fundraising campaigns, one must make full use of this propitious moment, for the more time passes since this event (see note 1) and since the laying of the cornerstone (see note 2), the more the feelings and enthusiasm subside. It will therefore be more difficult to revive them.

You tell me that you have sent correspondence on this matter, but "the body of the earth is one" (see note 3) and here too, such a mailing is merely a preliminary step (see note 4), a preparation for the visit that follows. It is impossible to rely solely on that.

It also follows that by announcing now the laying of a cornerstone for a new building at Kfar Chabad* for the Yeshiva of Lod (see note 5), one will obviously undermine the fundraising for the printing school, while also reducing the receipts for this new building, due to the proximity to the printing school campaign.

Instead of thinking about how to organize a new campaign (see note 6), it would be preferable to consider how to make the best use of the campaign currently being organized for the printing school.

Regarding the eighth paragraph of your letter of 15 Sivan, it is obvious that the identity of the lender is of no importance (see note 7). What matters, however, is knowing who will use the borrowed funds and will therefore bear the resulting expenses.

As for the ninth paragraph, you have correctly understood my position regarding the direction the printing school should take. I would have liked to have the merit of seeing you immediately move to concrete action. May Hashem grant that you do not delay, for the resulting deficiency could not be made up, Heaven forbid.

In your report of 7 Sivan, enclosed with this correspondence, a decision concerns the Ashkenazi students. I would like to know what consequences it has had, or at the very least, to receive a detailed description of what has been done to achieve such a result. Indeed, there is no further mention of it in any of your subsequent letters, and I greatly fear that this decision has remained merely written (see note 8) or, according to the expression that has now become common, that it is no longer on the agenda.

I would like to raise another point, which is equally essential, for it will allow one to determine the interest of the teachers and the dean in the Yeshiva. What do the students do during the twenty-four hours of Shabbos*, and who supervises them?

From time to time, you ask me whether a certain position should be entrusted to a certain person. It is clear that the administration must make such decisions on site, based on the candidate's capabilities, after a trial period, or based on the success he has achieved in his work if he has already held the same position elsewhere.

But it is quite obvious that:

A) One must distance oneself, for various reasons, from those who are distant (see note 9) in spirit.

B) The desire to devote oneself to Chabad* is more frequently found among those who have a connection to Chabad, and this desire is an absolute necessity (see note 10), particularly in Chabad institutions.

C) One must show every consideration toward those who have drawn close to Chabad, who have become so rather than being born as such, who have attached themselves. Moreover, as our Sages* point out, such individuals are very often more meticulous than those who were born into Chabad. This can be verified in practice.

This answers the question you posed regarding a certain person and all the members of his family. They must be given the position that suits them, so that all are fully satisfied. Obviously, there are various ways to accomplish this so that no one suffers from it (see note 11).

בהמשך למכתבי דז' מנ"א - ובינתים נתקבלו מכתבים מד' וז' מנ"א, כן נתקבלו התמונות המפות וההקלטות. ות"ח.

כבר כתבתי, שהמגבית לביה"ס לדפוס, ככל מגביות, צריך לנצל העת רצון ככל הדרוש. ומובן שככל שמתרחקים מהמאורע וההנחת אבן הפנה - מתמעטת ההתלהבות, במילא קשה יותר לחזור ולחדשה.

ומ"ש ששלחו בהנ"ל מכתבים וכו', סדנא דארעא חד הוא בכגון דא, ובפה שילוח מכתבים משמש רק חרישה והכנה להביקור דאחרי זה. ואי אפשר לסמוך על זה בלבד.

מזה מובן ג"כ, שלהכריז עתה הנחת פנה לבנין חדש בכפר חב"ד לישיבת לוד וכו' - ה"ז קלקול ברור להמגבית דבי"ס לדפוס (נוסף על המעטת ההכנסה אפילו לבנין החדש, כיון שבא בסמיכות זמן להמגבית דבי"ס לדפוס). ותחת להתבונן בעריכת מגבית חדשה - צריך להתבונן בניצול כל האפשריות דמגבית בי"ס לדפוס.

למכתבם דט"ו סיון סעיף שמיני - מובן שאינו נוגע מי הלוה הרשמי, אלא נוגע מי ישתמש בכסף ההלואה - שעליו מוטלות הוצאות הקשורות בזה.

לסעיף ט' שם, כיוונו לדעתי בהנוגע לכיוון בי"ס לדפוס. והלואי הייתי זוכה והיו מתחילים בפעולות ממשיות, והלואי שלא יהי' ע"י איחור הזמן חסרון לא יוכל להמנות ח"ו.

בפ"כ ז' סיון המצורף להנ"ל: - ישנה החלטה ע"ד תלמידים אשכנזים. ואתענין לדעת מהתוצאות בזה או עכ"פ תיאור בפרטיות הצעדים שנעשו להשגת הנ"ל. כי חוששני, בהעדר הזכרון עד"ז בכל מכ', שההחלטה נשארה בכתב, וכלשון המורגל עתה - עברו לסדר היום.

כן אעורר עוד נקודה (ועיקרית היא, כיון שיש בזה לבחון התענינות הר"מ והר"י בעניני הישיבה): מה עושים התלמידים במשך כל המעל"ע דש"ק, ומי המשגיח על זה...

בשאלותיהם מזמן לזמן אודות קבלת פב"פ לתפקיד פלוני וכיו"ב, מובן שבזה על ההנהלה להחליט על אתר, מתאים לכשרונות המועמד לאחרי הנסיון או מתאים להצלחתו בעבודתו, באם כבר שרת במקום אחר בתפקיד דומה. אבל מובן: א) שיש להזהר פון פרעמדע ברוח, ומכמה טעמים. ב) מסירה ונתינה לעניני חב"ד עלולה יותר אצל השייכים לחב"ד, והרי מסירה ונתינה זו הכרחיות הן, ובפרט במוסדות חב"ד. ג) אלו שנתקרבו לחב"ד (געווארענע, ניט געבארענע) ונתקשרו - צריך לקרבן ביותר. ובפרט, ע"ד מרז"ל, שבכמה ענינים מדקדקים הם יותר מן הגיבארענע. וכנראה במוחש, - וזה בא במענה גם על שאלותיהם בהנוגע למר... וב"ב - שיחיו. ומזה מובן שצריך לסדרם באופן שיהיו הנ"ל שבעי רצון (ובודאי כמה אופני הסתדרות כזו - מבלי שיסבלו הענינים)...
