I greet you and bless you.
I respond to your letter of 27 Tammuz.
I read with alarm that you are contemplating imposing fasts upon yourself, basing yourself on what is stated in chapter 3 of Iggeres HaTeshuvah* by the Alter Rebbe*. Moreover, you add that you have the strength to do so even in summer (see note 1). If you are willing to listen to me, discard this idea immediately upon receiving this letter. And if you have already done so more than three times, you should convene three of your friends (see note 2) and they will annul it for you (see note 3).
I have already explained elsewhere that it is a mistake to think that by fasting one adopts a more stringent approach. On the contrary, this approach is far less rigorous, since it leads one to neglect the Torah* and the prayer to which one should be devoting oneself. And the Alter Rebbe himself bears testimony on this matter, regarding our era, and states in this chapter 3 (see note 4): "In our generations, this is forbidden..."
It is surely unnecessary to say more. One can concretely observe what results from these fasts, even though not all constitutions are identical in this regard. In some, the consequences appear immediately; in others, later. In all, nevertheless, Torah and prayer are eventually compromised.
But perhaps you truly wish to "diminish your fat and your blood" (see note 5), which is in fact incomprehensible, for why go against the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov* (see note 6) that the body must participate in the service of Hashem (see note 7)? In any event, if this is truly your wish, you know the explanation of the Rebbe Maharash* (see note 8) that several fasts can be accomplished by restraining one's speech and one's thought (see note 9). You should consult the Sefer HaToldos Maharash*, page 72.
In practice, one can verify, on the one hand, that it is more difficult to fast in this manner than in the simple sense, and on the other hand, that one does not thereby conceive self-satisfaction, as is sometimes the case with fasting in its literal sense.
In this matter, what is most important above all is that Jews who fear the Word of Hashem engage in a fierce battle against the deep darkness of exile, in this period of the heels of Moshiach*. Moreover, we are all like "firebrands saved from the fire" (see note 10). We must therefore also accomplish what was incumbent upon the martyrs who died to sanctify the Name of Hashem. Every free moment must be devoted to this, enabling the gloom of the world to be illuminated by "the candle that is a mitzvah* and the Torah that is a light," by the luminary of the Torah, which is Chassidus*. And practice has shown that one has far greater success in this matter when the body does not pose an obstacle — because it is hungry, thirsty, or sad.
What concerns a person is his own affair, of which no one has knowledge, not knowing what the Heavenly Court has decided (see note 11). It is not the same, however, when it comes to drawing the hearts of the children of Yisroel closer to our Father Who is in Heaven, with joy and love. One can see the fruits of such action in this world.
In accordance with the well-known saying of our holy masters, it is certain that no effort is ever in vain. I have already written — including, it seems to me, to you yourself — that there is no reason to take winding roads and tortuous paths in order to ascend to the House of Hashem, when our holy masters have paved a broad highway upon which all Jews can travel, from the smallest to the greatest, in their daily lives, in order to build a Sanctuary for Hashem here below, by applying to their conduct the principle: "In all your ways, know Him."
May Hashem grant me the merit of receiving, by return mail, a letter in which you announce good news to me. Indeed, you will tell me that you have abandoned the idea set forth at the beginning of your letter (see note 12), that you observe the result of your joyful efforts to illuminate the portion of the world entrusted to you, and your four cubits — including in the simplest sense — in your home. For this purpose, you will maintain your body in good health. And you will also have profound health, since your soul will possess it as well.
In anticipation of your good news by return mail.
