B"H
4 Menachem Av 5716
Brooklyn
To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yaakov (see note 1),
I greet you and bless you.
I respond to your letter of the eve of Rosh Chodesh* Menachem (see note 2).
You mention the repetition and the modification of the words Ve La Harog, "and to kill," and Lifneihem, "before them" (see note 3). Perhaps there were two successive teachings (see note 4). Indeed, the customs of Purim* were printed during the lifetime, here below, of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, after he had reviewed the text.
Concerning what you say about the blessing Ha Rav Es Riveinu, I indeed saw my father-in-law, the Rebbe, recite it in the absence of ten people, when he was in Paris (see note 5). In this regard, it was I who read the Megillah* for him at that time, and when I repeated these words, he expressed his satisfaction with a gesture. Naturally, he merely gestured because we were in the middle of the reading. Then, after the reading, the conversation turned to other subjects.
You mention the word Zeicher*, which can be spelled with five or six vowel points (see note 6). You have surely seen the various opinions expressed on this matter in the Ketzos HaShulchan*. I did not have the opportunity to receive an instruction from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, on this subject.
The reason for my proposal in this matter is set forth in a note on this custom, which is published in the Purim fascicles. But there is, in addition, another reason that does not appear in that text. It is known, indeed, what Rabbi Abahu instituted at Caesarea, as reported in tractate Rosh Hashanah* 34 — in order to combine all customs at once and that one should not have the impression that there are two Torahs.
You mention having sent here a list of customs known to you. I do not recall it. Perhaps I forgot or perhaps the document was sent to someone else. My proposal therefore still stands (see note 7), for the benefit of all.
In this regard, all the customs published in the fascicles and pamphlets printed during the lifetime, here below, of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, were of course reviewed by him. As for those published subsequently, I indicated whether they resulted from my own reasoning, and in that case I provided the explanation. And if this is not the case, it is because I heard it from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, or observed it in his practice.
Last week, three young men from Canada visited me. They were passing through here on their way to the Holy Land, and I took the liberty of giving them your address, explaining that through you they could make contact with those who can evaluate the situation in the field of education and youth — to learn the details that others would wish to hide from them.
I saw them only once, but they come from Chassidic* families. In America, they are considered to be people who fear Hashem. If they had broader knowledge and knew the value of things, their fear of Hashem would be even more profound.
I have learned that you are not in good health. May Hashem grant that you recover your strength, that, in the common expression, you "retain your power" — in its literal sense and according to the explanation given by the Alter Rebbe* in the Chassidic discourse* entitled Maskil Le'Eisan HaEzrachi*, printed in the Kuntres Limud HaChassidus*.
With my blessing,
M. Schneerson

(2) Av.
(3) Words from the Megillah of Esther, as it is read on Purim. In his letter of the eve of Rosh Chodesh Menachem Av, Rav Landa, responding to letter no. 4443, wrote: "Here is what I remember from our holy master, the Rebbe Rashab*. When he asked me, for the first time, to read the Megillah at Rostov, using his own Megillah, he said to me before beginning the reading: 'Among us, one does not repeat. One says Ve La Harog and Lifneihem.' This is what I did. I also read thus in Moscow before your father-in-law, the Purim when he returned from Rostov, fearing searches that were then to take place in that city. And we read the Megillah, being just a few people, in a hotel in Zaryadye. Indeed, he then asked me to recite the blessing Ha Rav Es Riveinu, 'He wages our battle,' even without ten people present. Similarly, in Parshas* Zachor, the word Zeicher, 'remembrance,' was always read with a Segol, and in the parashah 'And Amalek came,' with a Tzeirei."
(4) In a first instance, the Rebbe Rashab instructed not to repeat these words; then, in a second instance, he advised doing so.
(5) On Purim 5698 (1938).
(6) With a Tzeirei and a Segol, or with two Segols.
(7) To establish such a list of customs.
