Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 16 Tammuz. I thank you for what you wrote about the farbrengens* organized on the occasion of the propitious days that have passed, although you were brief given the importance of all this — but no doubt you will complete it at the next opportunity.
The Mishnah* states that "the act is essential, and not the theory" — meaning that study is important, but practice is even more so. Accordingly, I have great hope that each one will exert himself, in keeping with his situation, to channel the inspiration on the spot, during the following days, into the actions, words, and even thoughts of the participants and of those who benefit from your influence.
May Hashem grant that you achieve considerable success. And just as you announce good news to me about this farbrengen, Hashem will grant you the merit of giving me good news in this matter as well.
What has just been said will also help you understand why I am surprised by the beginning of your letter. You tell me that your heart burns with the desire to study, but that you are prevented from doing so, whereas the Creator of the world, Who directs it, commands, every day, to study all parts of the Torah*.
You know the halachic* ruling issued on this subject in the Laws of Torah Study of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, chapters 1, 4, and 10. Moreover, you know what our Sages say, in Tractate Eruvin* 64a, about one who declares: "This teaching is agreeable, that one is not" — even though such a person acknowledges that it is indeed a teaching, without, however, considering it agreeable. This is self-evident.
The holy Tanya, at the beginning of chapter 41, states: "Hashem stands before him. He observes, probes his innermost being and his heart to determine whether he serves Him as is fitting." On this matter, it is surely unnecessary to say more.
Please let me know by return whether the wording of your letter was imprecise, whether this is not really what you meant to say, or whether you have also rectified what occurred, regretting the past and accessing teshuvah*. For if you used to study one page when you did not have the obligation to rectify your past, you will henceforth study two. You should consult, on this subject, the end of chapter 9 of Iggeres HaTeshuvah*.
Obviously, all of this concerns not only you personally, but also all your students. You know that "you shall love your fellow as yourself" is a great principle of the Torah. I await good news of all this.
As you request, I will mention those you cite at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us.
You no doubt maintain, each day, the three well-known studies — Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya.
With my blessing,
On behalf of the Rebbe Shlita,
The secretary,
E. Kwint,
I duly received your letter of 24 Tammuz. You ask about your state of health. Stop thinking about all this. Consult a doctor and follow his prescriptions regarding how to organize your day, without investing your mental energy in this.
You also refer to your sister. She too must consult a doctor. Our Sages affirm, indeed, that "the Torah authorizes the physician to heal." They also emphasize that one must always follow the ways of nature. Thus, the One Who heals all flesh will enable you to recover.
