To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Shmuel Dober,

Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your envelope of 3/7, together with its contents.

I am surprised that you say nothing of your effort to spread Yiddishkeit* and, in particular, the wellsprings* of Chassidus*. Such is, indeed, the mission of every person, and the Mishnah* states that "I was created to serve my Creator." And this service consists of the Torah* and the mitzvos*, of which a great principle declares: "You shall love your fellow as yourself" (Vayikra 19:18).

By coming to the aid of other Jews in matters of Torah and mitzvos, one strengthens the success of one's own accomplishments. Certainly, one must presume that every Jew is an emissary, fulfilling the mission that Hashem entrusts to him, as explained in the Likkutei Torah*, at the end of Parshas Vayikra*. Nevertheless, the Halachah*, at the beginning of the Shulchan Aruch*, Yoreh De'ah*, states that one does not rely on a presumption whenever verification is possible (that is, verifying that Jews are indeed practicing the Torah and mitzvos). Moreover, Jews bear collective responsibility, particularly in our generation — the generation of ikvesa diMeshicha* (the footsteps of Moshiach*), when "he stands behind our wall" (Shir HaShirim* 2:9).

To someone such as you, it is surely unnecessary to say more.

I send you my blessing, in the words of our master, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, for a "healthy summer," and that you report good news of all this.

ולפלא שאינו מודיע מהשתדלותו בהפצת היהדות והפצת המעינות ביחוד, שהרי הנ"ל הם הן מתפקידו של האדם וכדבר משנה, אני נבראתי לשמש את קוני, אשר השמוש הזה נעשה על ידי עניני תורה ומצות שכלל גדול בהם הענין דואהבת לרעך כמוך ועל ידי העזר לבני ישראל בעניני תורה ומצות מוסיפים ההצלחה בעבודת עצמו בזה, ואף שצריך להעמיד כאו"א מבנ"י על החזקה דשליח (היינו כאו"א מבני ישראל) עושה שליחותו של אדם העליון - כמבואר בלקו"ת ס"פ ויקרא - בכל זה ידוע הפס"ד שבמקום שיש לברר אין סומכין על החזקה (שו"ע יו"ד בתחלתו), ובפרט שכל ישראל ערבים זב"ז, וביחוד בדורנו דרא דעקבתא דמשיחא שהנה זה עומד אחר כתלנו, ובודאי לדכוותי' האריכות בזה אך למותר.
