To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Gedalya,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the 16th and 19th of Tammuz. As you request, I will mention the names of all those you cite at the holy resting place (the Ohel*) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe (the Frierdiker Rebbe*), whose merit protects us, that they may obtain the fulfillment of their needs, in accordance with what you write.

You intercede on their behalf, and you yourself will therefore increase your practice of the Torah* and the mitzvos*, which are the channel and the receptacles enabling one to obtain and absorb the blessings of Hashem. And Hashem will strengthen the fulfillment of your own request.

Various texts explain the importance of tzedakah*, and it would therefore be good for your mother, may Hashem grant her long life, to devote a few coins to it every weekday morning. Likewise, have the mezuzos* of the house in which she resides checked.

I learned with particular interest from your letter that you were one of the leaders of Yavne, the association of religious students. No doubt you maintain contact with those who previously were, like you, part of this organization, even though you have completed your studies at that university, as you write.

Indeed, to each person applies the great principle: "You shall love your fellow as yourself" (Vayikra 19:18). And if this is so for a material and physical good, how much more so for a moral good, through which one acquires both the World to Come and this world. Moreover, this obligation applies more specifically to those who belong to the same category, who have received the same education.

Our Sages express this idea in a brief saying: "The poor of your city take priority" (over those of another city, in receiving tzedakah). And "there is no poverty except in knowledge" (Nedarim 41a) — this term applies to one who is lacking in a certain domain, even if he is rich in others.

The responsibility is even greater when this fellow is a young man, setting out in life. Very often, the approach of the association and the manner in which its work is introduced mark the entire life of a young person and the home he will subsequently establish. This effort will have an influence on several generations.

It follows that every effort, every action in this direction, is justified, since its effects last for decades. It can, in particular, have an impact in the religious domain, in the life of the Jewish people, and in the service of Hashem, which is the purpose for which man was created. Indeed, the Mishnah* states, at the end of Tractate Kiddushin*, that "I was created to serve my Creator."

I would like to receive good news of your actions in this matter.

With my blessing to report good news,

P.S.: Various circles have made it a practice to send their publications, in all disciplines and all languages, to the library in my vicinity. Indeed, this library serves the greatest number.

No doubt you will do the same, especially since your disciplines are, as you write, philosophy, pedagogy, and mathematics. I thank you in advance.
