To the young man Nachman,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your note, which accompanied the letter you received from your friend.

At a propitious moment, I will mention his name at the holy resting place (the Ohel*) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe (the Frierdiker Rebbe*), whose merit protects us, that he may invoke divine mercy so that your friend obtain the fulfillment of all his needs.

As you know, the Creator of the world, Who directs it, teaches that: "One who claims not to have exerted effort yet to have achieved success — do not believe him." Moreover, it was said to each and every one within the entire Jewish people: "See, I have placed before you life and good... and you shall choose life" (Devarim 30:15, 19). This is indeed a personal choice, but it is stated that "one who comes to purify himself is assisted from Above" (Shabbos 104a).

May Hashem grant that you find the right words to explain to your friend that he has received all the necessary strength to be a streetlamp, illuminating the place where he currently finds himself — the channel bringing the light of the Torah*, as well as the vitality of the practice of the mitzvos*, to all those in his surroundings.

In keeping with what has just been said, it is precisely this path that he must choose. In this way, he will achieve success not only in fulfilling the true mission entrusted to him, but also in increasing the blessings and success in his personal concerns.

If at all times and in every place, such a role increases both the responsibility and the merit, how much more so in the place where he finds himself, in the situation that is his. His involvement in this matter is all the greater in that the souls of his father and of preceding generations await and demand it of him, in these terms: "Is it for this that we gave of ourselves, sometimes even every day, for the Torah and the mitzvos — so that my son should not adopt the conduct called for by the Torah, that he should squander a major portion of his time on insignificant preoccupations, justifying himself with explanations in which he himself does not believe?"

May Hashem grant that the merit of his ancestors protect your friend and place him in a ray of light, so that he may also illuminate his surroundings.

בעת רצון יזכירוהו על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע להתעוררות ר"ר בהמצטרך לו.

וכבר ידוע הוראת בורא עולם ומנהיגו, לא יגעת ומצאת אל תאמין, ועוד זאת אשר על כאו"א בתוך כלל ישראל נאמר ראה נתתי לפניך את החיים ואת הטוב גו' ובחרת בחיים, ובחרת אתה דוקא בעצמך, אלא שהבא לטהר מסייעין לו, ויה"ר שימצא האותיות המתאימות להסביר לחבירו אשר ניתנה לו היכולת המלאה לשמש פנס אור במקומו עתה וצנור דרך בו יבוא אור התורה וחיות בקיום המצות לכל אלה הנמצאים בסביבתו, אבל ע"פ האמור לעיל צריך הוא לבחור בדרך זו ואז יצליח לא רק במילוי תפקידו האמיתי אלא גם לתוספת הברכה וההצלחה בעניניו הפרטים, ואם בכל מקום ובכל זמן יש תפקיד זה מגדיל האחריות וגם הזכות עאכו"כ המקום שם נמצא ומצבו הוא וגדולה אחריותו כ"פ ככה כיון שנשמת אביו והדורות שלפניו עומדים ותובעים ממנו, האם על זה מסרנו נפשנו, ואפילו בכל יום ויום, על התורה והמצוה בכדי שבני וכו' יבלה חלק חשוב מזמנו על ענינים של מה בכך ויצדיק את עצמו בטעמים שגם הוא בעצמו יודע שאינם צודקים, ויה"ר שזכות אבותיו תעמוד לחבירו להעמידו בקרן אורה ולהאיר גם את סביבתו.
