To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Moshe Zeev,
Greetings and blessings,
I received your letter with pleasure, together with its contents — the results of your visit to the Chabad schools and, more generally, your impressions of Chabad in the Holy Land. I have great hope that in the future, you will continue to write to me with all necessary detail, without concealment and without embellishment. Indeed, all of this affects practical action and the community as a whole.
As you can see, your actions until now have made it possible to rectify several details, even though all beginnings are difficult. It will therefore be easier in the future, provided that the cooperation of all those who are able to offer it is obtained, with a single objective — to broaden and develop the institutions, both quantitatively and qualitatively, in accordance with the will of my father-in-law, the Rebbe (the Frierdiker Rebbe*), whose merit protects us.
All those who participate in this have great merit. This is especially the case for those who have advanced the situation and drawn attention to what had been neglected. This is self-evident.
I hope you are continuing your visits to the Chabad institutions, that you are taking an interest in everything related to Chabad, despite the curious tactic of the yetzer hara* that is called "vacations." To our misfortune and our sorrow, this practice has been adopted even by many people who fear the word of Hashem throughout the year, yet are convinced that during vacations, everything is different — that it is no longer necessary to exert effort.
These people do not perceive the extent to which their attitude contradicts the Torah*, according to which "man is born to toil" (Iyov 5:7), "one who claims not to have exerted effort yet to have achieved success — do not believe him" (Megillah 6b), and "days were formed, and through him, Hashem enters into them" (Tehillim 139:16). Not a single day, not a single hour is superfluous. A person receives precisely the time needed to carry out the profound mission entrusted to him — that is, in the words of the Mishnah*, "I was created to serve my Creator" (Kiddushin, end).
Nothing more is added to this time, which means that every moment not used in the proper manner, that does not fit within this framework, is a loss that cannot be recovered — "naked days," in the expression of the holy Zohar*. It is unnecessary to say more, for this should be evident to anyone who walks in uprightness.
These days, the emissaries (sent to Eretz Yisroel* following the Kfar Chabad* attack; see letter 4546), may Hashem grant them long life, are arriving in the Holy Land from here for several weeks, to serve as delegates of the Chassidim* and my representatives. It is no doubt superfluous to point out to you that you should meet with them and, to the extent possible, accompany them on their visits. The merit of public service will come to your aid.
Awaiting good and detailed news of all this,
