To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Aharon Dov,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 18 Tammuz, in which you raise:

A) The closing of a door (see letter 1923).

The testament of Rabbi Yehudah HaChassid* discusses the closing of an oven, in chapters 20 and 49, as well as in paragraphs 611 and 1146. And there is a written instruction from our holy masters, apparently from the Tzemach Tzedek*, which states:

"Regarding the closing of a window or door, my grandfather, the Rebbe (the Alter Rebbe*), instructed that an opening be made in the metal seal. This can be done from both sides, and it can then be covered with plaster."

In a letter from my father-in-law, the Rebbe (the Frierdiker Rebbe*), whose merit protects us, dated 27 Teves 5708 (1947) (see Igrot Kodesh of the Previous Rebbe, vol. 9, letter 3177), it states:

"The custom is, in the window that is being closed, to make a round opening of one and a half tefachim* (approximately twelve centimeters). Into this opening, a hollow tube is inserted from one side to the other, and when the sealing is completed, plugs are placed on both sides. Then plaster is applied, as usual."

B) Your unfamiliarity with Chabad customs. You ask whether there exists a work that compiles them.

One is indeed being prepared for publication (the Sefer HaMinhagim*, the encyclopedia of Chabad customs), but for the time being, it is not yet ready. These customs appear in various pamphlets. Those for Pesach* are in the Haggadah* published by Kehot*, those for Elul* and Tishrei* in the machzor* published by Kehot. Additionally, a HaYom Yom* calendar has been sent to you, in which several customs are also found, as indicated by the index.

No doubt you will be generous with others, to whom you will also transmit knowledge of these customs. The merit of all depends on you.

I received with pleasure your letter describing the impression made upon you by the visit of the emissaries (sent to Eretz Yisroel* following the Kfar Chabad* attack; see letter 4546), may Hashem grant them long life. May Hashem grant that this good impression receive practical application in daily life, for such is the purpose of man.

במענה על מכתבו מח"י תמוז, בו כותב:

א) בענין סתימת פתח, מובא בצוואת רבי יהודה החסיד בענין סתימת תנור, צוואה סי' כ' ומ"ט ובפנים הספר סי' תרי"א ותתשמ"ו, ונמצא בכתבי נשיאנו הק' וכנראה הוא מכ"ק אדמו"ר הצ"צ, וז"ל: ולענין סתימת החלון ודלת צווה כ"ק א"א זקני מו"ר זצוקללה"ה נ"ע לעשות חור בהסתימה בקנה (טרייבעל) של מתכות ואפי' סתימה מב' הצדדים וגם יכולים אח"כ לטוח בטיט. ובמכתב כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, כ"ז טבת תש"ח, וז"ל: נוהגים אשר במקום החלון שסותמים מניחים חור עגול כטפח וחצי, ובחור זה מכניסים שפופרת של בלעך פתוחה משני העברים וכאשר גומרים מלאכת הסתימה אז עושים דעקלעך על השפופרת ואז עושים המעזיבה כנהוג.

ב) במ"ש שאינו בקי במנהגי חב"ד וכו' ושואל אם יש ספר בו נקבצו המנהגים בזה. - הנה אף שמכינים זה להדפסה, אבל עדיין לא בא לפועל, ונדפסו המנהגים בכמה מהקונטרסים, מנהגי פסח, בהגדה של פסח הוצאת קה"ת, מנהגי אלול ותשרי במחזור השלם של הוצאת קה"ת, וכיו"ב, כן נשלח לו בפ"ע לוח היום יום שגם בו כמה מנהגים וכמצוין במפתח, ובטח תהי' עינו טובה גם בשל אחרים להודיעם ג"כ ממנהגים אלו וזכות הרבים תלוי בו.

נעם לי לקבל מכתבו ע"ד הרושם מביקור השלוחים שליט"א. ויהי רצון שיבוא הרושם ויפעול בענינים של מעשה ובחיי היום יומיים, כי זה כל האדם.
