I greet you and bless you.

I am responding to your letter, in which you speak of your lack of ardor and constancy, your lack of study.

The explanation of all this is already found in numerous texts, in particular at the beginning of the Tanya*, according to which every Jew possesses a soul originating from evil and from the "other side." It is, nevertheless, a force of evil that retains the possibility of elevation and possesses a little good. This soul fights for the body and its garments (see note 1) to be placed under its dominion.

And to those who grant it even a hair's breadth of power apply the words of the verse (Yeshayahu 5:18): "Woe to those who draw sin with cords of vanity, and transgression as with the ropes of a wagon." You should consult the commentators on this verse.

Nevertheless, free will is granted to every Jew, who can therefore resist his yetzer hara*. And for one who agrees to engage in this battle, one immediately receives the help of Hashem.

All of this applies equally to your case. You are not exceptional when you claim that you cannot control yourself and study with ardor (see note 2), just as you are not exceptional in possessing a yetzer hara.

It is therefore quite clear that everything depends on your will. If you desire it, you will be able to overcome it (see note 3), to study in the fitting manner the revealed dimension of Torah and Chassidus*, to do so as the Creator of the world, Who directs it, has asked. He has granted you the necessary strengths to put this directive into practice, on condition that you do not squander what has been given to you.

Cease, therefore, telling yourself that such-and-such an accomplishment is difficult. This is no harder than other activities — quite the contrary. Divine Providence has led you to the Yeshivah Tomchei Temimim*. Few are those who have such merit. Unfortunately, it has been verified that many have received immense material wealth and have not used it in the fitting manner — quite the contrary. One must therefore ensure that the same does not happen with spiritual wealth, Heaven forbid. You must understand what I mean.

May Hashem grant that you concretely return to the straight path. May Hashem grant you success.

With my blessing,

Notes:

(1) The thoughts, words, and actions.

(2) A poor use of free will makes such a situation possible.

(3) The evil inclination.
