I greet you and bless you.

I am responding to your letter of the 9th of Tammuz, and I read with pleasure that you are continuing your studies — that you are learning Chassidus* in particular. No doubt the term "continuing" that you employ is not precise, for one must experience elevation in the domain of holiness. This means that one must increase and not merely continue what one was doing before. Surely, in the future, you will introduce such an addition from time to time. And in you will be fulfilled the promise of our Sages, according to which "to whoever adds, they add" — the satisfaction of one's needs, material and spiritual.

You tell me that, for this same reason, you have not joined the Chabad youth association. I am surprised, for you yourself cite the following directive of the Mishnah*: "Do not separate from the community." In fact, every action of a person can be accomplished within the collective or individually. The same applies to the study of Torah, and also to what results from it, in accordance with the teaching of our Sages who say: "Great is study that leads to action." You should also consult the commentaries on the Mishnah, in the second chapter of tractate Avos*, Mishnah 2: "All who engage in communal needs... I shall reserve for you a great reward." This is self-evident.

You speak to me of your commentaries on Chassidus. However, one does not begin the study of Torah — including Chassidus — by writing one's own commentaries. One must put into practice the teaching of our Sages, stated in tractate Avodah Zarah 19a, according to which: "One studies the Torah, and afterward one meditates upon it." And this has an impact on both the approach to the text and its comprehension, as the commentators of the Talmud explain at that reference.

No doubt you participated in the Chassidic farbrengen* of the days of the liberation of the 12th and 13th of Tammuz. May Hashem grant that your inspiration continue throughout the year.

With my blessing,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,
