To the Rav, Chassid*, Tzaddik*, of illustrious lineage, of fine conduct,

Rav Chaim Shimon Zeev (see note 1),

I greet you and bless you.

I duly received your letter from the day on which the word "good" was said twice during creation (see note 2). It followed a particularly long interruption. You date your letter from the Sidrah* "He crouched and lay down as a lion" (see note 3).

This verse also introduces the Chassidic discourse that was delivered on the luminous day of the liberation (see note 4) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the 12th and 13th of Tammuz. One of the points developed in this discourse is the following. The Midrash Bereishis Rabbah*, in Parshas Vayechi, chapter 98, specifies that one "crouches and lies down" during the time of exile, before the era of Moshiach*. Despite this, one is "as a lion" or "a lioness."

Indeed, the Jewish people find themselves in exile only under the compulsion of the Divine Word. Moreover, this is solely in order to gather the sparks of holiness (see note 5), as the holy Zohar* explains at length, volume 1, page 237b.

לאחרי הפסק הכי ארוך נתקבל מכתבו מיום שהוכפל בו כי טוב, וכלשונו במכתבו לסדר כרע שכב כארי, שבפסוק זה הותחל ג"כ מאמר דא"ח שנאמר ביום הבהיר הוא יום הגאולה של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר י"ב וי"ג תמוז, ואחת הנקודות שבמאמר, שאף שכרע שכב שכמבואר הפירוש בב"ר ויחי פ' צ"ח, היא התקופה שמצדקי' עד מלך המשיח זמן הגלות, בכ"ז הוא כארי וכלביא, כי האפשרית דישראל בגלות הוא רק דאנוסים ע"פ הדבור וגם זה בשביל ללקט ניצוצות הקדושה וכמבואר בזוה"ק בארוכה (חלק א' רל"ז ב')...
