Igrot Kodesh · Letter 4531 — Shabbos & Halachah

A great scandal (see note 1) is taking place here concerning the Israeli ship that is about to set sail from this city on the eve of this Shabbos* (see note 2). Organized groups from the department of Torah culture (see note 3), in particular, will travel on it. Furthermore, they refuse to reimburse those who cancelled their voyage so as not to transgress Shabbos.

Public opinion is in uproar and I hope you will take energetic measures to rectify all of this. There is a clear prohibition against traveling on these ships during Shabbos. No discussion is necessary in this matter. Every mechanic knows that it is in no way dangerous to anchor a ship and even to shut down the engines for as long as one wishes. Yet it is certain that this is not done (see note 4).

מהומה גדולה כאן בענין האני' הישראלית העומדת להפליג מכאן ערב שבת זה ובה נוסעים כתות המאורגנות ממחלקת תרבות תורנית וכדומה ונוסף להנ"ל מסרבים להחזיר הממון לאלו שביטלו נסיעתם בכדי להמנע מחילול שבת... דעת הקהל הולך וסוער ותקותי שכבודו יאחז באמצעים נמרצים לתקן כל הנ"ל. איסור ברור לנסוע בשבת באניות האמורות ואין צורך בשקו"ט כיון שידוע לכל מכונאי שאין סכנת נפשות לעגן הספינה ואפילו לכבות המכונות למשך זמן שרוצים, וחזקה וברור שלא יעשו זה.
