I greet you and bless you.

I am responding to your letter of the 4th of Tammuz and the one that preceded it, in which you ask me the following question. An additional name was given to a sick woman, and then it was discovered that this name was already borne by her sister.

I am surprised that you do not specify whether she has borne this additional name for more than thirty days. In my view, in all cases, one should not take an inappropriate initiative in this matter, as various texts explain — in particular the testament of Rabbi Yehudah HaChassid*. Consequently, even if thirty days have passed, one should apply what the halachah* states regarding a name that has been forgotten — that is, a new name should be added to her.

As is the Jewish custom, this will be done on the occasion of a brachah* that will be recited when one of her relatives is called to the Torah. And she will keep this new name. Furthermore, various texts explain that the name that was added should be cited first.

May Hashem grant that this change of name bring her good mazal* and blessing — a visible and tangible good.

With my blessing,
