8 Tammuz 5716

I greet you and bless you.
I received your letter of the 4th of Tammuz and the request for a blessing it contained with immense astonishment. It indicates that during all this time you were not at the Yeshivah* of Lod. You write that this is so "for various reasons," but I imagine that the essential reason is the event at Kfar Chabad (see note 1). All the other reasons are linked to this one and stem from it.
This astonishment is also mixed with pain, for it is said: "Shall your brothers go to war while you remain here?" Thus, in a time of calm, you remain with your friends, and as soon as a problem arises, unfortunately, you flee the battle.
I am certain that you are weakening yourself, and I am not referring only to your neshamah*, your divine soul, but also to your intellectual soul (see note 2). Furthermore, this weakening has undoubtedly strengthened your nefesh habehamis*. But even more so, the continuation of the verse says: "Why do you discourage the heart of the children of Israel from crossing into the land that Hashem has given them?"
Indeed, the land that Hashem has given is, in the precise sense, the four cubits* of prayer and Torah — all that Hashem possesses since the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash*. Now, this cannot be found in any other place than the Yeshivah. Yet you have left it and you imagine that the place where you are is safer — which defies the logic of a Jew.
On this subject, you should also consult the halachah* ruled in the Shulchan Aruch*, Yoreh De'ah, chapter 242, paragraph 25. It is unnecessary to say more, so evident is this. Moreover, I think you were already aware of this even before receiving my letter. Nevertheless, you decided to remain where you are now. Submission to the domain of holiness was therefore not the criterion you chose to follow.
You mention your birthday. You will no doubt adopt what has recently become the custom of the Chassidim* on this day.
May Hashem grant that the request we formulate at the beginning of each day be fulfilled in you: "Do not bring us to the test." And if it is truly impossible otherwise (see note 3), you will overcome it — in contrast to what was said above.
With my blessing for good news of all this,
Notes:
(1) The attack that was perpetrated there. See, on this subject, letter no. 4281 and the foreword.
(2) Capable of reasoning to determine what is good for a person.
(3) If the test is unavoidable.
