I greet you and bless you.

I am surprised not to have heard from you for a particularly long time. I do not receive news from you through other people either. I learned that a young man knew your address and I am therefore sending you these few lines through his intermediary.

I would like to remind you of the following verses: "You are children to Hashem your Elokim*" and "My firstborn son, Yisroel." Every Jew and every Jewess are children of our Father Who is in Heaven. Now, "the earth is filled with His glory." As the Alter Rebbe* states in the holy Tanya*, at the beginning of chapter 41: "Hashem stands before him" — that is, before each one of us — "He observes, He probes the innards and the heart, to see whether he serves Him as is fitting."

You can deduce from this what the conduct of the children of the King, King of kings, the Holy One blessed be He, must be. A person here below, whatever his will and his attitude when he is alone, will adopt a completely different behavior if he is in the presence of his father — who is a great sage, very wealthy and upright, possessing all qualities.

Now, if this is so for the physical father, whom one can sometimes imagine deceiving, since "a person relies on what he sees with his eyes," how much more so is this the case when one is in the presence of our Father Who is in Heaven and fills the worlds, the heavens and the earth.

In His great goodness, Hashem has made known to each person what He asks of him. And His demands are only in accordance with the strengths that people possess. They concern all the mitzvos* stated in our holy Torah, Torah of life.

One of these fundamental mitzvos is defined by the verse: "You shall love your fellow as yourself." One therefore cannot be content with having good conduct oneself. One must also exercise a positive influence on the Jews in one's surroundings, so that they too follow the path of Torah and mitzvos.

If one truly wishes it, one can know success in this matter. I await good news of your actions in the areas that have just been discussed.

לפלא שזה זמן רב ביותר שלא נתקבלו ידיעות ממנו וגם לא ידיעות מאחרים אודותו, וכיון שבהזדמנות נודעתי אשר האברך... יודע כתבתו, שולח הנני שורותי אלה אליו על ידו.

והוא לעוררו על מ"ש בנים אתם לה' אלקיכם, בני בכורי ישראל, שכל אחד ואחת מבני ישראל בנים הם לאבינו שבשמים אשר מלא כל הארץ כבודו, ובלשון רבנו הזקן בספר תניא קדישא ריש פרק מ"א, נצב עליו (על כאו"א מאתנו) ומביט עליו ובוחן כליות ולב אם עובדו כראוי, ומזה מובן איך צריכה להיות ההנהגה של בניו של מלך מלכי המלכים הקב"ה, ורואים גם באדם התחתון, אשר איך שיהי' רצון האדם והנהגתו כשהוא בפני עצמו, הרי בהמצאו בנוכחותו של אביו והאב הוא חכם גדול עשיר גדול ושלם בכל המעלות, מתנהג הבן באופן אחר לגמרי, ואם כן הוא בהנוגע לאב גשמי שפעמים יש לדמות שיש לרמות אותו כי האדם יראה לעינים, עאכו"כ איך שצריכה לפעול הנוכחות של אבינו שבשמים אשר איהו ממלא כולהו עלמין את השמים ואת הארץ, ובחסדו הגדול הודיע את כ"א מהו מבקש, ואינו מבקש אלא לפי כחם, הם המצות האמורות בתורתנו הק' תורת חיים, ואחת המצות היסודיות מיוסד על מה שכתוב ואהבת לרעך כמוך, שאין להסתפק בהנהגה טובה של עצמו, וצריך להשפיע גם על הנמצא בסביבתו מבני ישראל שגם הם ילכו בדרך התורה והמצוה, וכשרוצים באמת מצליחים גם בזה, ואחכה לבשו"ט מפעולותיו בכל הענינים האמורים.
