To the attention of Mr. Eliezer Steinman (see note 1),
I greet you and bless you.
I duly received your letter of the 13th of Sivan and the one that preceded it. My response was delayed because it was difficult for me to write after the event at Kfar Chabad (see note 2). Some wished to cite, in this regard, the verse (see note 3): "I shall be sanctified* through those who are close to Me," but this too is not clear. This verse indicates only that such an event can sometimes occur. Nevertheless, it is not comprehensible, and it is therefore not an explanation but rather a comparison. It is therefore the time to put into practice the words of the verse: "And Aharon was silent."
Nevertheless, this concerns only the interpretation of the event. Regarding its consequences, however, there is not the slightest doubt. This was the case with our ancestors, several thousand years ago, in the face of the Egyptians. The response to suffering and to the decree was then quite clear: "The more they were afflicted, the more they multiplied and prospered."
Indeed, the books of Kabbalah* state that the generation of ikvesa d'Meshicha* is the reincarnation of the generation of the Exodus from Egypt, which experienced the first redemption, through the first redeemer, Moshe Rabbeinu*. As our Sages indicate, it is through teshuvah* that we will attain the final redemption, which will be true, through the last redeemer, Moshe Rabbeinu.
I have good hope that not only the men of Chabad in the strict sense will react in this way and give this response, but also those who appreciate the ideas of Chassidus* Chabad and are close to them, and even those who contribute only from time to time. They too must help strengthen the activities of Chabad in the Holy Land, which will be restored and rebuilt by our righteous Moshiach*, to develop and expand them.
You conclude your letter by saying that "submission to a complete and traditional Jewish life no longer exists today, including among the traditionalists who concretely practice all the mitzvos*." This is not characteristic of our era. It was already so previously.
Nevertheless, in my view, the conclusion to be drawn from this is not the one you mention in your letter. Quite the contrary — this situation must awaken hidden strengths within you, in order to repair it. For a person cannot content himself with his revealed strengths alone. From the very beginning of creation, when it was completed, the Torah states that "Hashem created to make," and our Sages explain: "To repair."
Thus, the world was created so that man can not only perfect it but also repair it. As long as a single person is found in the world, the world still needs repair. Now, the repair of the external world is linked to that of the inner world — the world of man. Our Sages express this idea in a brief saying, commented upon by several Chabad texts, according to which a neshamah* descends below to experience advancement. Indeed, this neshamah, being above, "stagnates," just like the malachim*.
Another brief remark — and you will excuse me, here again, for not being in agreement with what you write — it concerns, in this instance, advancement in Yiddishkeit*, from that of the body to that of the neshamah, or the reverse. In principle, both possibilities exist (see note 4), but concretely, when it comes to reaching the goal, there is a profound difference between the two.
To go from Yiddishkeit of the body to that of the neshamah — regarding a person who possesses both and whose body is physical, endowed with five senses — the path is sure, even if it may sometimes include elevations and descents, falls, as it is said: "The tzaddik* falls seven times."
By contrast, advancement from Yiddishkeit of the neshamah to that of the body, at first and perhaps even afterward, may not receive the body's assent. Several errors may be committed, or even things more grave. How much more so is this the case in our generation, which has not yet freed itself from the false idea of materialism (see note 5) — a conception that was very widespread among those who lived in error in the previous generation.
On this subject, the necessity of the concrete practice of mitzvos was analyzed by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, in a letter (see note 6) that he addressed to a professor in Germany. It was published in HaTamim*, volume 4, which appeared in Warsaw in 1936.
