To the attention of Dr. D. Elkana,
Greetings and blessings,
I received with pleasure your letter of May 15 and was pleased to learn that you are interested in Chassidus*. I have taken note of some of your conceptions on this matter, particularly regarding joy.
You write that the feeling of joy depends on the action of glands, on the hormonal transfer reaching the brain through blood circulation. Nevertheless, the body and the soul are bound together, truly unified, to the point of forming a single entity. It is therefore natural that every circumstance affecting the soul also manifests in the body.
I hope you will agree with me that the unity of this microcosm is an example, an illustration of the true unity that exists in the greater world. This is not pantheism, according to which everything is nature and matter. On the contrary, everything is spirituality and, more so, Divinity, as the author of the Tanya* briefly explains when commenting on the verse "A unique nation on the earth." He states, indeed, in Igeres HaKodesh*, chapter 9, page 114a, that "even in their material concerns, they (see note 1) do not separate from the true Unity, Heaven forbid."
It is worth noting that those who have adopted the ideas of materialism (see note 2) themselves, when they discovered a moral manifestation linked to physical changes — for example, electrical reactions — were overjoyed "as if they had found great spoil," as though this confirmed their conception.
But in reality, there is no contradiction here. On the contrary, it is the logical consequence of the absolute truth — that of the unity of the Creator: "Hashem is One" and "there is none besides Him." This means not only that there is no other, Heaven forbid. It also means that there is no other existence than His. This is one of the fundamental concepts of Chassidus*, as explained in the Sha'ar HaYichud VeHaEmunah* of the Alter Rebbe*.
At the conclusion of your letter, you say that the Redemption cannot be complete as long as poverty has not disappeared from the earth, as long as people do not have shared work, shared responsibility, without distinction between poor and rich.
I do not share your view. By nature, a person experiences true happiness when he can do good for others. For this, one must be rich and the other poor. Nevertheless, this does not contradict your justified objection regarding the injustice of such a situation.
Chassidus* says that every creature, if it adopts conduct in conformity with its creation, does not merely receive. It also gives, so that the one who is poor in one domain is rich in another. This idea is wondrous and, moreover, our Torah* applies it even, so to speak, to the Creator of the world, Who directs it. He Himself sometimes receives, and He does not merely give, as Chassidic* discourses explain when commenting on the verse "You will thirst for the work of Your hands" and the statements of our Sages regarding the service of the Almighty.
You do not write what your medical specialty is, and I would like to know. In any case, when you devote yourself to the physical healing of those who come to consult you, I hope that you take into account the characteristics of their soul and its healing. How much more must this be so for those who do not know that their soul is ailing. Medical treatment is then even more necessary.
With my respects and my blessing,
If you have published books or articles, in any discipline, in any language, I would like to receive them for my library. I thank you in advance.
