To those who pray at the Nusach Ari*,

Anshei Lubavitch* synagogue in Dorchester,

may Hashem grant you long life,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you ask about the practice of the one who leads the service (see note 1) for Kabbalas Shabbos* (see note 2) and for Minchah* on Shabbos*.

We have had the merit of receiving, on this subject, the teaching of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, and the transmission of the customs of Lubavitch* Chabad*, in every generation. This teaching (see note 3) is as follows: "The chazzan* does not wear a tallis* for Minchah* and Maariv*, neither on Shabbos*, nor on a festival, nor on Rosh Hashanah*."

How much more must this be so during the weekdays.

Certainly, some synagogues have a different custom, but one knows the teaching of our Torah*, Torah* of life, in tractate Beitzah* 4b, which says: "Preserve the customs of your ancestors." And the Yerushalmi*, Pesachim*, chapter 4, paragraph 1, specifies: "Do not change the customs of your ancestors, whose spirit was agreeable."

זכינו לשמוע בזה הוראת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע ובמסורה במנהגי ליובאוויטש חב"ד מדור דור, וז"ל: - אין הש"ץ מתעטף בטלית למנחה או למעריב לא בשבת ויום טוב ולא בראש השנה.

וכן שכן אשר בימות החול אין עושים זה.

ואף שבאיזה בתי כנסיות מנהגים שונים בזה, כבר ידוע הוראת תורתנו תורת חיים, הזהרו במנהגי אבותיכם בידיכם (ביצה ד, ב) אל תשנו מנהג אבותיכם נוחי נפש (ירושלמי פסחים פ"ד הלכה א).
