29 Sivan 5716

Brooklyn

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 24 Sivan. I read with pleasure that you participated in the distribution of matzah shmurah*, but I am surprised that you conclude this paragraph by noting that the fact that all of this was accomplished at your initiative went practically unnoticed. Such humility is entirely out of place.

Without a doubt, if it were known that this action was yours, that you were its author, people would have been attentive to your word and your effort to promote the study of Chassidus* and the adoption of its practices and customs.

Certainly, it is useless to complain about the past. Nevertheless, I write this to you because you surely find yourself, from time to time, in the same situation again. In my view, you must therefore adopt the approach I have just defined. You know the saying of the Tzaddik*, the great Rav and Chassid*, Rabbi Hillel of Paritch (see note 1), according to which everything one accomplishes (see note 2) has the purpose of better understanding the ideas of Chassidus*.

The same applies in our era, that of the heel of Moshiach* (see note 3), whose coming depends on the spreading of the wellsprings (see note 4). The need of the moment therefore consists of seizing every opportunity for the sake of this dissemination, all the more so since you find yourself in a place where no one else does so.

You discuss your accountancy studies. Since you have already begun them and paid the tuition, you will continue and complete them. May Hashem grant that they not impose too great an effort upon you.

You also consider the situation of this woman and inform me that two specialist doctors are being consulted, without one being aware of the other. So that there be no confusion in the long run, it would be good to obtain diplomatically that they consult with each other in order to agree together on a treatment. Obviously, if one of the two risks becoming irritated or resentful as a result, one should be content to present the opinion of these two specialists to the family doctor and seek his counsel.

You speak of teaching religious soldiers, which depends on the willingness of the participants, and you say that for all these reasons there are only a small number. Now, you know the saying (see note 5) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, regarding the expression of our Sages: "One devotes oneself to Torah*." He underscores that one must do so as if it were a business activity (see note 6).

Indeed, a merchant does not remain shut up in his room, waiting for someone to come and ask him if he has merchandise to sell that would suit them. On the contrary, he runs, seeks out customers, precisely in places of heavy traffic. For someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to elaborate on both this image and what it signifies.

I would only like to underscore one point. Divine Providence has given you the opportunity to kindle several candles (see note 7), as it is said: "The candle of Hashem is the soul of man" — to illuminate not only your own portion of the world but theirs as well, through the light of Torah* and its luminary, which is its deep dimension. May Hashem grant that you seize this opportunity fully.

The moral satisfaction that results is considerable and the future reward will be great, for you will have caused immense satisfaction to the Creator of the world, which words cannot express. In accordance with the explanation our Sages give of the verse: "To separate the grain from the chaff" (see note 8), it is clear that these also concern soldiers who, for the moment, are not yet pious. And on the contrary... (see note 9).

What has just been said will enable you to understand my position regarding leaving the apartment in which you currently find yourself. For various reasons, this is not advisable. You explain why you refuse your current dwelling: there are no Chassidim* (see note 10), no Chassidic* farbrengens*. In my view, these are, on the contrary, positive reasons (see note 11), as I said in the preceding paragraph. Hashem acts "measure for measure" (see note 12), but in a greatly increased proportion. It is certain that, through the actions carried out in the place where you now find yourself, not only will your spirituality not diminish, but on the contrary.

You speak of a therapy with rays. I am surprised that this is being considered during a pregnancy. One should therefore opt, for example, for a treatment based on massages.

You ask me whether you should continue your educational activity. Here again, you can deduce my position from what has been said. You must indeed continue it and, moreover, perfect yourself in this area. And the same applies to your wife, when her situation permits — that is, some time after the birth, at a good and fruitful time.

You say that your wife teaches several subjects, which dilutes her influence. You know what is said of the Jewish people and of everything that concerns them: "You are the fewest of the nations." Despite this, the Jews ultimately succeed and are victorious. Commenting on the verse "You are all standing today...," our Sages observe that "the nations disappear, while you exist for eternity." And the same applies to everything concerning Torah* and mitzvos*, in comparison with what is also found among the other nations.

Your wife is surely in contact with the Chabad* women and girls of the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. And she participates in their activities, to the extent possible. I hope you will write me in detail on this subject. The simple fact of knowing that she will regularly have to report here on the actions she has carried out in this domain will lead her to take more initiative and to reveal all conceivable strengths for developing these activities.

With my blessing,
