To the attention of Dr. Chaim Beinart,
Greetings and blessings,
I have just received your letter of 9 Iyar* and, in its time, Dr. Shlomo Heidelberg of New York delivered to me (see note 1) the offprint from your book "The Judgments of the Inquisition in Toledo." I thank you for it. No doubt you will send your other publications to the library located near me. Indeed, it serves the greatest number of people. I thank you in advance.
You descend from a Chabad* family, great-grandchild and grandchild of a Chassid*. Now, our Sages say, "When one shoots an arrow upward, it falls back on its point" (see note 2). I hope that this will indeed be the case for you (see note 3), not only during special days — Shabbos* and festivals — but also in daily life. Likewise, you will use, in this direction, the influence that you exert on others.
Indeed, in our generation, everyone has been struck, and one is a firebrand saved from the flames (see note 4). The responsibility one bears is all the greater, since it rests upon those whom Divine Providence has saved, in order to "sustain a great nation."
Moreover, your profession consists of teaching the young, of guiding them. Now, all those whom Divine Providence has directed toward education, whatever the discipline, must lead their students to put into practice their deep and essential mission — that of living a life in accordance with our Torah*, Torah* of life, and its mitzvos*.
As you know, young people do not tolerate compromises (see note 5). When one transmits to them the Word of Hashem in its entirety and in its purity, one conquers their hearts, even if some make the mistake of thinking that it is precisely by lightening the halachah* and making compromises that one gains their trust. For someone like you, it is surely unnecessary to say more.
A traditional education, without compromise, prepares the student for a truly happy life, a happiness that is both physical and moral.
With my blessing for good news of all this,
