Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the luminous day of the Hilloula* of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai (see note 1), in which you tell me that you are a study supervisor (see note 2) for the revealed part of the Torah*. Nevertheless, you do not answer the students' questions, because you are currently studying a different tractate from the one being taught in the class.

It is quite clear that this explanation is unacceptable, for it is within your power to study the same tractate as they do. Moreover, the Alter Rebbe* rules, in his Laws of Torah* Study, chapter 1, paragraph 12, that in such a case, it is essential that the students be guided in the proper manner.

The same applies to the second reason you cite. You tell me that you do not have the strength to answer them, because they ask too many questions. Here too, one can question this, for if they ask good questions, it is wise to answer them. On the other hand, if these questions are not apt, it is your responsibility to explain this to them. There is a fundamental principle of education here: students must ask good questions and receive good answers. This is self-evident.

You fear that the efforts you have invested in them have been wasted, and you cite, on this subject, a saying of the Alter Rebbe*. I am particularly surprised that a chassid* can express himself this way. Even if this saying is not an invention (see note 3), even if it truly exists, the Alter Rebbe*, for his part, had knowledge of the source of a soul and what it was meant to accomplish in this life. This is not the case, however, for people like us.

You should also consult the Laws of Torah* Study of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 1, paragraph 4, according to which a soul can only receive the Torah*... (see note 4). Who among us can take the responsibility of acting contrary to the halachic* position he expressed (see note 5)?

With my blessing,

Notes

(1) Lag BaOmer*, the 18th of Iyar*.

(2) In a yeshivah*.

(3) The Rebbe implies, however, that this is indeed the case.

(4) ...except by studying all of its parts.

(5) By depriving the students of Torah* study.
