Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from erev* the time of the Giving of our Torah* (see note 1). I am surprised to note that you do not say a word about your study of the Torah*, in general, and that of Chassidus*, in particular. Yet it is through this channel and through these vessels that the chassidim* receive the blessings of Hashem, in all their needs and in those of the members of their family.

This includes, of course, the necessity to find favor in the eyes of Hashem and of people, and to devote oneself with success to communal needs. And this is, in particular, the answer that can be given to your question. As you know, our Sages say that when someone has the fear of Hashem, his words are heard. Now, how can one love Hashem and fear Him if not through reflection?

The great master (see note 2), in his Laws of the Foundations of the Torah*, at the beginning of chapter 2, rules that this is indeed so, and Chassidus* explains it at length, beginning with the holy Tanya*. In fact, such study is necessary even if one sets aside all these reasons, which are linked to the reward — pras*, of the same etymology as prusa*, that which is cut, as is explained in Likkutei Torah*, Shir HaShirim*, page 17a. And this can be related to the statement of our Sages that "the poor person customarily eats a cut loaf" (see note 3). Now, "there is no poor person except in knowledge."

In our era, the wellsprings of Chassidus* have been abundantly revealed. Each of us is therefore rich in this regard. Nevertheless, to your case as well applies the statement of our Sages that "a person acts first on his own behalf." May Hashem therefore grant that you study Chassidus* abundantly, at least by applying its terms to yourself personally, as has been said.

In this way, you will experience elevation from one level to the next. You will find the details of all this in the Derech Chaim* (see note 4). And you will consult the references in the indices.

You ask me how one can explain the necessity of a mechitzah* (see note 5). Several articles have already been published on this subject (see note 6), including in the newspapers of the United States. Some are even incisive. You have surely read them and will therefore find the appropriate words for your location and this moment.

May Hashem grant that you give me good news of all this. You will also announce another piece of good news by telling me that you observe the three studies applicable to everyone, which were instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. These concern the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*, and are well known.

With my blessing,
