Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you tell me that you feel a spiritual decline, affecting your fear of Hashem and your study of the Torah*. You therefore wish to change the place where you pursue your studies.

It is true that fear is the gateway leading toward Hashem. Thus, the Zohar*, Volume 1, page 8a, says: "This is the gate of elevation." And an allusion to this is also found in the revealed part of the Torah*. Indeed, tractate Shabbos* 31b describes fear as "the outer keys." And the Mishnah* states that one must fear Hashem before devoting oneself to the wisdom of the Torah*.

You are currently in the situation you describe, and you will therefore endeavor to pursue your studies at the Yeshivah* of Brunoy, near Paris. You will also commit to exercising a positive influence on your fellow, when the Creator of the world grants you success in your studies.

Hashem will search your heart and He will see that your desire is sincere. He will fulfill your wish in this matter.

במענה על מכתבו בו כותב אשר מרגיש הוא שנפל ממדריגתו ביראת שמים ובלימוד התורה, ולכן רוצה לשנות מקום לימודו.

והנה אמת נכון הדבר אשר היראה היא השער לה' וכלשון הזהר דא תרעא לאלעה (זהר חלק א' ח, א) ונרמז גם כן בנגלה דאורייתא, שקראו ליראה מפתחות החיצוניות (שבת לא, ב) ודבר משנה היא שיראתו צריכה להיות קודמת לחכמת התורה, וכיון שמצבו עתה כנ"ל, הנה ישתדל לנסוע ללמוד בישיבת תומכי תמימים אשר בברונא-פאריז, ויקבל על עצמו להשפיע גם על זולתו כשיחוננו בורא עולם בהצלחה בלימודיו, וה' יראה ללבב שרצונו בזה באמת וימלא משאלות לבבו בזה.
